Is a single layer of this too restrictive a pest barrier? Zip-tied over an open plumbing vent last week and have since noticed a musty smell coming from the bathroom ceiling vent I believe it ties into. Wondering if I should swap it with some chicken wire

What are you trying to keep out???? Chicken wire will stop birds from entering and possibly building a nest in the pipe but it won't keep bugs out.
I have put up some chicken wire on my dryer vent outlet that is on the side of my house once I noticed birds getting in the vent piping to build a nest. The flap that should close when the dryer wasn't working would not close completely and they found a way in.
To stop that I fashioned a piece of chicken wire with large enough holes in it to allow any lint that got past the filter to escape but small enough to keep the birds out.

Smell inside or out?
If inside ya prolly gotta clogged vent pipe
All smell should go up thru the gent pipe to outside air

Rats mainly.. trying to block all access from roof rats as we’ve had a problem with them since moving in.
Roaches second as we have had quite a few falling from the bathroom vent … not fun to have a roach fall in my lap while im browsing TD and dropping a deuce

If there's a Mrs. involved, the decibel level could be deafening. I know it would if that happened at my house.
Oh, and the potential clean-up would be something for a HazMat crew.

Does your bathroom vent tie into plumbing?

Put out rat poison around your house area. Get in the attic, see if the vent hose has a hole allowing roaches to get in. Put sticky traps in the attic.

A plumbing vent is a piece of pipe usually 2-3” in diameter that protrudes through the roof about a foot. It vents the plumbing. If it’s over a bathroom it’s normally 3”.
Putting a screen over a plumbing vent like that to keep out rats shouldn’t bring odors inside.
Now there are exhaust vents that exhaust air from bathrooms to remove odors. There is normally some kind of low silhouette sheet metal cap on the roof. In thd exhaust fan connected by duct to the cap there is usually a backdraft damper. It keeps air or animals ftom coming in to your house. I don’t understand how putting screen on this type vent would induce odors into your bathroom unless it is now plugged up and air can’t exhaust through it.

Im confused the fart fan or the toilet/ plumbing vent?

If you have rats and bugs coming into your house from your plumbing vents, you have bigger problems.

Just wait until you have to replace the fan and all the shite you'll find up there. Dirt daubers by the pound......ask me how I know
