Some chemicals don’t evaporate, they concentrate instead. Adding water dilutes back to previous concentrations. Calcium and CYA are included. Draining & replacing some water is the only effective way to drop their levels.
Invest in a test kit. Much more accurate than strips. Every addition of cal hypo or chlorine pucks is pushing your chemistry higher. I got lazy and cheap after the stupid demic and went back to pucks. Need to replace about half the pool water now to get CYA back to a reasonable level. High CYA requires higher chlorine levels. Bleach is the cleanest source besides SWG.

Craigslist/marketplace/“know a guy”
These sources are fine for solid products that last a very long time. They are not acceptable for liquid that has a limited effective shelf life.
