Portable vs Window AC Units...

I'm in the process of getting ready for hurricane season and the last thing I have to buy is an AC unit. When shopping for options I can across these type types. I'm not too familiar with the portable AC units. Which type is better to have, more reliable, does a better job cooling, and easier to install? I would like to get two units for two separate bedrooms. One room is 12x12 and the other is 23*18.

Both have pros and cons.
Window unit will be more efficient, but obviously less portable.
Depending on where you live, you may not want a window unit permanently hanging out your window.
If you're just buying something to keep in a closet/garage and dragging it out for hooking up to a generator. You'll get more bang for your buck from a window unit. It's just more tedious to setup.

I’m in the same boat as you and contemplating the same issue. Richardo has stated the pros and cons of each. Portability, weight of unit and ease of set up is a big consideration for me.
In regards to portable units, from what I’ve read on a professional HVAC forum Whynter portable ACs or heat pumps are stated to be better units, and if you go this route you’ll want a dual hose unit. They are a tad more pricey than window units.

Personally, at the moment I’m leaning towards a 12 to 14 K BTU Whynter portable dual hose unit to cool a larger area similar in size to your large bedroom, and smaller 5K BTU window unit, which I already own, to cool a bedroom.

The best portable units are the dual hose inverter A/C's. The midea dua smart inverter. They cost more but a traditional 14k btu portable a/c might have a 8k-10k rating under the new guidelines where a dual hose inverter unit will have a 12k rating. Toshiba has smart inverter units too (probably made by midea)
For the best bang for your buck, 5k btu window units will cool a bedroom, are cheap and small enough to be easy to put in the window by one person. I have 2 5k units and a portable 14k now. We actually use the portable in the hottest room in our house, I can hang meat in there if I shut the door.

I am looking to replace a wall AC and was asking the same... We keep a small window unit boxed up. I was interested in learning more about portable...

I have a couple of the portable ones to assist my undersized split system and in my tool room in my shop. Def the way they don’t need the drain line anymore is a plus. Depending on the size of what you are wanting to cool, they would be the better option for what you are looking to do. Widow units are a pia by yourself. Don’t buy the cheapest just because it’s temporary though. I got a black and decker one at Home Depot and although it was 3-400 bucks and it wouldn’t cool my bathroom. The bigger LG works great

I had two portable units in my living room when the power was out and they did hardly anything. both were 6,000btu. My 10,000 btu window unit was noticeably better running by itself.
And you still have to duct out the exhaust on the portable unit through a window, so i really don't get why it's a perceived easier setup over a window unit, especially considering you're going to use this once every 3-4 years.

Portable Honeywell unit all day every day. I have a 13,500 btu and a 9500 btu in a smaller room. They work great. Just as good if not better than any window unit. Yes, the upfront cost is a bit higher. But then installation and more importantly maintenance is so much easier. Plus you can easily store them away for the winter.

Hisense 18000 BTU window unit here. It was a little tricky to install. Also it runs on 220 power, but it is rated to cool up to 1000 Sq Ft. I believe it would do every bit of that.
