Building this year and the wife really wants it and I really don’t. My reasoning is we have a sink 9 feet from where you’re saying to put a second one and it ruins the look of the pristine kitchen island. Not to mention it’s expensive af to add. Her big reasons are so kids can wash their hands if the main sink is occupied as well as being able to prep closer to the stove. The prep reason is the best reason to add it but I’m not sold. Anyone have thoughts on this?

I have a large bar sink that we use for prep and such when we’re doing a lot of cooking. It’s very useful.

Does your wife do half or more of the cooking? If so, give her the appropriate level of feedback in the decision making process. Building or renovating can put enough strain on relationships as it is. Sometimes you gotta make a right on red.

Anti:

Tell the kids to go wash their dirty hands in the bathroom if the kitchen sink you already have is being used by your wife.

Misread the post. This is for a house in the planning stage, but I still am ANTI on this.

how fat is your wife? seriously?

its more shite to break and to keep clean plus its about as useful as having a second stove.

if you have a full time maid and F it money you could do it but why?

This is for a house that doesn't exist yet?

I might would add it. Could be a nice feature. I wouldn't try to add it to an existing structure though.

What the frick?

I think you're mentally handicapped. Always have been.

To answer the OP, a second sink is really useful if you guys enjoy cooking a lot and for a lot of people. We don't have one, but my parents do and they use it a good bit.

We have an extra sink in our kitchen. It’s been used like 2 times 4 years.

A lot of it depends on the kitchen layout. My parents built a house around 2000, and the cabinets were a large L-shape, with an island that had a cooktop on it. Dad insisted on putting a small bowl sink at the end of the L, because the weird triple sink they put in at the other end was just near the oven and not close to the cooktop. After a few years, they never used it and had it removed and a new countertop installed. About the only thing it would be good for is quickly washing your hands or if the other sink is occupied, but I see no point in it. They did use it to chill a few bottles of wine at parties over the years before they removed it, and it probably saw more use with that and dumping a bag of ice in it than actually using it as a sink.

At my in-laws house, they do have a small one near the oven and cooktop, and I think it has a garbage disposal in it so it gets used quite a bit. The main sink is off to the side next to the dishwasher and they only use it for rinsing dishes.

My aunt has one and people use it all the time b/c she entertains a lot. So it rarely gets used as a prep sink, but more as a bar sink. I did not put one in my house, bc I didn't want to lose the counterspace. Unless the kitchen is large and the island is oversized, it's usually a bad use of space. But that is all depending on how you guys use your kitchen.

I love my prep sink on my island.
It’s round and has no lip, so I bought a Chinese colander that fits in the sink as well as a solid bowl. The plumbing makes me lose half the island storage. In some kitchens, this may matter. I have enough other storage that I can live with it.
This sink is only 8ft or so from my main sink. It’s also only about 15ft from my utility room sink. So you can stand in the right spot and almost touch three different sinks. I don’t think it looks bad. I think it’s very functional. I get a fair number of compliments on the island sink.

The kids can wash their hands in the bathroom or laundry room (I assume you'll have a sink there).

We built several years ago and went with 1 sink only - didn't really consider a second sink, although I knew some people have them. Never have I been cooking and thought, "Gosh, I wish I had a second prep sink."

I can honestly say there’s times I wished I had a second sink. As said washing hands, not just kids but others. But I also don’t have a laundry sink close by, there is a bathroom close enough though.

It’s very possible to get a cutting board or piece of stone or whatever that fits in the sink and fits flush. A small faucet and proper faucet placement (as in not in the middle of an island) and it wouldn’t take up much space. The storage below from the comment above though would absolutely be true about the plumbing, you could store some pots or small appliances around it, but it would consume significant cabinet space.

Make the main sink a galley sink and add another faucet to it.

Kohler has a nice one with an integrated prep area and chopping block. The sink is double wide so it's easy to wash large pots and the second faucet comes in handy as well to wash hands etc.

I'm with you on not wanting to mess up the island. Our island is simply that, no stove, no sink. We wanted it nice and clear. Personally I don't see the need for a whole other sink for little things. That's just something else you have to worry about, and another damn sink to clean.

We have a prep sink in a 5x11 island. On the corner by the fridge with the main sink directly behind it.

I like it for prep, I can face the TV set and go about my business while I watch games and the like.

An odd note, if you get one of those undivided big arse farmhouse sinks you will want the prep sink. It is great for dropping in meat to defrost or use while your big arse undivided sink has something else in it. (I dont like our big undivided farmhouse sink btw)

I think your wife is correct. You aint keeping that big island pristine anyway. Someone will use it for a landing spot for all kinds of crap, especially if you have kids. I spend about 20 percent of my time moving crap off the island.

I have a sink in our "wet bar" that we never use. I'd love to remove it but I would have to fill that hole with matching granite..
