Why not snap traps? My biggest issue with poisons, besides the ability of other animals besides rodents getting to it and dying is how rats will sometimes die in your house's walls or ceiling.

That stench is gawd awful for about 2 weeks before it dissipates, and what a bad time that is to be living in the house--especially if your house is cold and needs heating this time of year.

I've owned rental property for 20 years and never had a rat die inside the house from rat poison.

Count yourself lucky. I used rat poison once and had 2 die inside my house, one in the attic and one made it into a wall cavity that I had to rip open to get rid of the stench.

Nothing like a putrid, rotting rodent liquifying inside an interior wall to make you toss your lunch.

You are definitely more right then wrong, but I've had rodents die in a wall. I don't think its a concern though.

The best option as far as OP is concerned is to use snap traps where you can access and poison other places. Put peanut butter on poison also. Poison is also a good bet to keep out for prevention and keeping tabs on a potential future problem.

This stuff, Just One Bite II is really good. It takes about five days for the problem to be completely gone.

The Victor electric trap is the bomb. Put some peanut butter in it, connect to wifi and set it and forget it.

It’ll ping you when a rodent is kilt.

These are cool as hell! Never knew they existed. I have a rat issue due to a former neighbor having a pot bellied pig in his backyard. You wouldn't believe the number of rats I have on security camera video. They are all over my wife's (no pics) bird feeders, and I have evidence of them in my cabinet on the back porch. I have been using poison, but I always worry about my dogs possibly getting a hold of that. Stray cats have been helpful but they always leave most of their kill behind.

As low as $20. I buy a larger version that’s about $60.

We had a family about a year ago and it got 6-7 of them without s battery change. I think it’s 6 C batteries.

Is this the way to go?

My dog killed like 6 babies back in spring of 21. Just a downright massacre, good boy. Thought the problem was solved but he's back to sniffing the cabinets and going nuts around the edge of the house.

Went down in the crawl space today and found almost certainly banana shaped rat poo.

Weary of putting down poison for the rotting corpse thing and not knowing where the bodies are but I want to make sure I get them all.

One of the bastards gnawed through our molding under the cabinets, scurried into our pantry and got into the dog food while we were gone for Christmas. Felt violated.

What about prevention? I have basically a ground level deck that I know they use for cover and are getting into the crawl space. There's no way for me to get back that far and work on additional sealing etc.

Any idea with that or just keep the traps going when the dogs start to get crazy with it?

Rats moved into my shed a few years ago. Never had much luck with snap traps so I tried poison bait blocks. I didn't see any dead ones so not sure if that killed any.

Bait was still disappearing after two weeks so I bought a small Havahart live trap. Caught about six rats (one at a time) before the bait finally went untouched. The bad part is that you have to not "havahart" and terminate the little boogers. On the plus side, you control disposal and won't have dead smelly rats inside or outside your house.

With traps you can get six or so but the rest of them learn to avoid the traps. The effective poisons kill slowly so they don’t figure out the association between the food and death.
