Just give up and get her the Crate and Barrel headboard and footboard that she wants, even if it costs 5x what is on Wayfair. You're not going to win, and if you let a woman convince you to sleep with a baby/toddler in your bed, you already know this.

A few years ago, my wife found a bed that she loved and tried to buy. At the time it was one that she saw on a TV show (Chip and Joanna Gaines) and called the company that made the bed.

It was going to be $9k but worse it was going to be 10 mth minimum.

So, I got some poplar and built it myself:

Used a router and a jigsaw for the curves and the shiplapping. Everything else was hand tools.

I used Ana White plan about 10 years ago. Simple farmhouse style king bed. Distressed it by staining the joints, painting it white and then sanding the paint off the joints. Don't have pics of mine, but this is from her website.

Wow. That isn't bad at all. I'll be bookmarking that for when I get ready to build some furniture.

Here is some of the furniture items I've built over the years. Think I've posted some of these here over the years.

I was about to ask how you got that aggressive of a curve in it.

I ripped about 4 pieces of wood a half inch wide and bent them close to the shape I needed then glued them together and clamped them overnight. when I took them out of the form they kinda sprung back straighter than I needed but I just pocket drilled them from the inside to the curved pieces and they took form.

I recently tried my hand at steam bending. I needed an aggressive curve but I couldn't accomplish what I wanted without the cedar breaking. I got 36 b/f of aromatic cedar in my truck right now to finish that project and I've abandoned the steam bending idea.

It's 6 or 8 pieces glued together (and more for thickness) in a staggered to give the height and then used jig saw to rough it out.

I made a pattern out of MDF and then refined the curve with the pattern and router.

ETA: the bed is a lot taller than a picture show. At the peak of the curve it's ~75" tall.

This is one that I have saved. Did you use 2x6’s on the tops of the head and footboards? That pic from her sote doesn’t look like it’s 5.5” wide across the top but maybe it’s perspective. My wife doesn’t want a lot extending from the foot so maybe I could rip it down a little so it’s not as wide.

Also do you use pocket holes? I was considering using furniture hardware bolts or bed rail brackets instead.

What type of wood did you use?

Yes, built it as her plans showed. Yes, I used pocket holes. I just used pine since I was painting it and trying to build it as cheaply as possible.

OP.... any chance you could just build you own? I built ours which was a California King and then once we downsized to a queen, I just shrunk the original build. Headboard is two old raised panel doors mounted to the wall.

Where’d you find straight enough pine? Everyone seems to state box stores is bowed or twisted.

I have all of the tools and skills required, but none of the time. I have a 13 month old and one on the way so I’m just going to search wayfair told hold me over for a couple of years and then I’m sure I’ll end up building.

The king size bed isn’t for the kids to sleep in, we don’t do that. It’s for me to have space with a hot pregnant wife and 46 body pillows

The problem is the bed frames are ridiculous. She’s looking at upholstered and they’re all around 2k. Anyone have good experience with some of the more reasonable ones from wayfair or other places. I don’t think she’s stuck on upholstered but does want a headboard.

My wife and I JUST went through this. We got this one from Ashley furniture:

Upholstered, plain, simple. It was like $600 including having it delivered to the house. I assembled myself in about 45 minutes. Bought a king frame on Amazon for $100 and we already had the mattress. We're loving it so far.
