Repair compressor or replace AC?

So it looks like the compressor is dead on our upstairs unit.
Here is what we're working with...
The outdoor units are only 5 years old. The indoor units are about 20 years old. The previous owners cheaped out...
The units still used R22.
Unfortunately, the warranty on the units only transfers for 5 years and were just past the expiration.
I am honestly thinking just bite the bullet and replace the condenser and evaporator coil.
What do yall think?

I would pony up and just replace both components. Especially if you will be there more than a couple more years.

Best bet.

With a R22, and the age of the air handler (furnace and evaporator coil, assuming at some point those components weren’t replaced) this would be the best route to take. Just the cost of the R22 refrigerant is in the $100 per pound range.
You have natural gas furnace in the air handler or electric heat strips for heating?

Well technically our unit has R22 and there are alternatives. You dont actually have to use r22. That being said our unit crapped out about 10 times in last 2 months and warranty company finally approved new AC. Well we been without for 2 weeks lol.

Yep, there are a few alternative replacement, and cheaper, refrigerants to R22 that could be used, for those that choose not to replace a R-22 unit and repair it, R407C being one, and a few others.

Good - I only asked b/c if by chance you had electric heat and not natural gas I was going to suggest you consider a heat pump as a replacement, but with natural gas, you want to go back with a natural gas furnace in the air handler if you choose to replace the system.

No need for heat pump in Louisiana

Bite the bullet and get rid of the R22 system.

Well, a little update.
I decided to check the capacitor before the tech came out, and of course that was the problem.
I didn't think the fan would still run fine if the capacitor was failing, but live and learn.
However, before I fixed it the guy came out to quote a new system. $5,500 for a 16 seer lennox ac and furnace. I think that's a pretty damn good price.
Obviously not going to be changing it out right now, but I can stomach that if/when the time comes.

If it is a 2.5 ton or bigger, yes, a very good price.

Good job on your part - I think all of us were all under the impression that a HVAC tech had checked the compressor and declared it dead. I was about to suggest getting a second opinion because a compressor going bad in 5 years is very unusual - it’s the most robust component of a HVAC unit - and I’ve watched multiple videos of techs declaring compressors dead and recommending system replacement (particularly with R-22 units) and homeowner calls another company for a second opinion and 2nd tech with a diagnostic and repair mentality, vs a sales mentality, finds a simple repairable problem with the compressor such as burned terminal connection, need for a hard start kit, etc.
As fish said, that’s a very good price on a 16 Seer system. Two years this month I got an estimate on a 16 seer single stage Trane system (4 ton) - $10,200. It’s good to do your homework now on a system replacement while you have a functioning unit because with a 20 year old air handler who knows when that will die.

20 year old unit and you're wondering if you should replace the whole package???
At that age, it should be a no-brainer. Replace the entire unit to get them both at the same SEER rating for more efficiency, quieter running and better cooling and heating.
I changed out my unit last year after serving me well for 27 years, but I knew it was just a matter of time before it went south and with summer approaching, I was not willing to take that chance one more time.

here is the deal, r-22 costs like gold and the price of that alone pays for the difference between a compressor and another outdoor unit
if inside units are 290 years old then just do both systems completely new inside and out and have new duct work put in as well.
after 20 years with all mouse poop and dusty dank shite in the duct work it needs to go
the cost savings in your electric bills will be very noticeable and in about 10 years that savings pays for the upgrade

gas furnace thats 20 yrs old needs to go, its getting to the point of being a safety issue at this point

thats a great price but have all the duct work replaced as well, thats gonna add a bout another $800 to the cost but its more then well worth it to be all new fresh and clean with no funk.
set it up to have both units and all duct work replaced for winter time or the fall when the windows are open because that the time you get the best prices as well as you wont be uncomfortable while its being done

I would think twice about Lennox, out of 2 units Ive had 3 condensers(things) and 1 motor go out. Keep in mind my house is 6 years old, yep, you read that right SIX years old. I'm fixing to buy all new stuff I guess, not really sure what else to do.
