I want to replace my shower insert in a bathroom. It is fiberglass in a corner with a glass door and one glass wall. It is a 36x36 neo angle and I would like a 36x36 square insert. The thing is really old and I need to get a new one.

I called ez bath and they quoted me 8k to redo just the shower. No chance I am paying that. I see these inserts at home depot that would work just fine and cost about 1k.

So my question is how hard would it be for me to rip out the old one and put an insert from home depot in?

I would rather just hire someone to do this for me. What type of contractor would I call to to replace this? Can a plumber do this or do I need a contractor that does rehab type stuff?

This is what I am looking at:

Thanks

Those prefab kits are pretty simple to install. I did one at my dad’s fishing camp about a decade ago and have had no problems.

Also $8k for one of those units installed is robbery. Might want to contact some other people for quotes if you don’t feel like DIYing it. Pretty much anyone can do it. Plumber, contractor, handyman.

There is a special tool that cuts the drain. Other then that, you looking at some sheetrock work and painting.

You can just use a dremel.

one thing to consider is if a fiberglass unit can fit through all the doors/hallways etc to get where it needs to be, most interior doors are not 36" wide so be mindful of the units you are looking at. For around $2500 you should be able to get someone to build you a custom shower though.

Most of the ones I have seen online come in multiple pieces now. I’m having trouble finding one that would work-size, drain in the correct spot, etc. wondering who I could get to build me one? I’m probably making this too complicated.

I wouldnt do the multiple piece ones (at least not a cheap one) The tend to leak where they fit together and/or have a lot of sealing chaulk that's required inside of them that tends to peel off, collect mold, etc.

Have you thought about doing a tiled shower or those marble sheets?

Call Gulf States Marble in Slidell. You won’t be disappointed. It’s cultured marble and it’s probably around the same cost as that fiberglass junk.

Have any of you guys used precut acrylic panels? I've got tiles in my shower, and it would be super expensive to tear out and redo. Quote was about $3500... it's a guest bathroom, and it seems like all you really have to do is use adhesive to glue the acrylic panels down?

I wanted to bump this, as I am looking for advice on how to cover existing tiles in my shower. I don't want to have to rip out everything as that will be very expensive. Would like something that can just glue over

I've got a cultured marble sheet shower; it looks high-end and not plasticky at all. (Take care w/color choices.) I'm thinking that if your existing tile shower is level, you might be able to install cultured marble over it, at least on the walls. Honestly, I'd rip out the existing one just to determine if you've got any water damage lurking behind the tile.

I'll never have a tile shower again. The cultured marble is so much easier to maintain.
