Sheetrock Bathroom Mold

Our guest bathroom has black mold spots on the sheetrock around the bathtub/shower. I’ve used some bleach and tried to clean the areas but it never really goes away. Is ripping out the sheetrock about the only option or can it be cleaned with something else? The biggest issue is not using the exhaust fan while taking hot showers.

I would bleach it then prime it with oil base primer. Then paint.

Then run the damn exhaust fan for showers.

Post some pics of what you are dealing with, you either have a humidity problem or a slow leak

KILZ® Mold & Mildew Resistant Primer. That will do it.

Dealing with exact same issue right now. From what I’ve read bleach will not kill the spores, but only hide them. Supposedly white vinegar or 3% hydrogen peroxide will kill it so I sprayed the moldy areas with those. I also bought and used a product called Concrobium Mold Control. You can get it at Lowe’s.

Main thing is to find the source of moisture and correct it. I just replaced my vent fan, then used the products above and then primed the ceiling with Zinssers Mold Killing Primer and painted the ceiling with Zinssers Mold Resistant paint. Both of those I got at Lowe’s as well. If this doesn’t work I give up.

Gotta have a pic to see if it’s mold from a leak or just some surface mildew.

Odds are if it’s a leak, the roof boot for the vent stack is the culprit. You can make a fix without calling a roofer, if you can climb on your roof safely. Let me know if that’s the start of your problem.

Every bathroom I built when building homes, I put a Cathedral Ceiling, it opened the room and brought to steam up away from the mirrors and people.

It’s coming from son not running exhaust fan. He was taking hot showers and it was like a sauna in there and eventually built up on the sheetrock. I’ve made him turn exhaust fan on now but the mold is there from years of not doing it.

You should remove and replace.

Only reasonable solution is to replace your son with a different one.

I know you got this off the internet but bleach will absolutely kill mold. There are some products specifically made for killing mold that can be better, but generally speaking bleach is great.

Someone will come in here and say that most bleach is 94% water and that's true, and the reality is that all mold killers are no different and 80-95% water.

The returning mildew/ bleach issue comes from when the mold gets DEEP into dryway. All products will basically just kill the surface bleach. You gotta get the mold DRY or killing the surface mold while the underside is wet will just allow the mold to come back. If you can't dry it out, you may consider replacing it.

The best thing to do is stop using that shower for a couple of weeks. Kill the mold and then let it get as dry as possible. Fans on it and a dehumidifier is the best thing.

Then once it is dry you want to paint with some mold killing paint. You could also try repainting the bathroom with a semi gloss paint once finished. The more gloss a paint has the more coverage it has. So there's less room for water penetration.
