Should I mow my grass?

I haven’t mowed my lawn in two weeks and was planning to mow this weekend. However, despite watering the yard pretty regularly it appears to be pretty stressed from the heat. I’m curious if I should skip mowing and keep watering or is it best to mow.

Essentially, I’m asking will mowing it stress it more or is a slight trim healthy for growth?

I am mowing less frequently and leaving the blades longer for shading purposes.

I've chosen to wait and continue watering every few days. My yard isn't having a great time, but looks way better than any of my neighbors who have cut within the last couple weeks. Every one of their yards is brown.

If there is no need to mow then don't. What is the grass type and height of cut?

The only way I'd mow is if it's getting to looking pretty shaggy and then I'd set the mower higher to cut it less and just even it out.

I’m cutting it less..because it’s too damn hot!

Increased my HOC too so the sun doesn’t evaporate too much water. Even my centipede is looking great.

2.5 to 3 inch cut has worked best for me to have the grass fill in the thickest and provide more shade in the right spots.

Mostly it depends on your grass, though. I have centipede and it doesn't LIKE shade, but i had some bald spots of dirt and I felt like in order for the grass to spread out over it, it needed softer/damper stuff to grab onto. Worked for me.

In the end, the most critical thing really is proper watering in my experience.

The key is mowing on a higher deck. You want leaves to shade dirt from the sun and retain moisture. If you don't have an adjustable deck then hold off mowing.

Is there a mower out there that doesn't have a way to adjust the height of the cut?

Mix of centipede, Bermuda, St Aug, and Nut Sedge
Starting to get weeds under control. Deck level is currently at 3 in. I typically mow at 2.5 in.

Can I spray sedgehammer in this heat? Does <85 F mean at the time of application or high daily temps?

Is the lawn pretty pure, not weedy? If you let it like being long, it might not do as well getting short later. Cutting shorter helps the grass beat out weeds, if that is an issue.

Taller grass will beat out weeds better than short

I cut my SA at 4” all season and it is doing pretty well with the heat.

3.5” here, same. Still need to water when the blades start to wilt/stiffen but neighbors on both sides (who both have lawn crews that mow at 1.5-2” and scalp to shite every pass) have dead patches everywhere.

Ha . . . I’m convinced that the builder/previous owner never put sod down in the backyard. It reminds me of my time in Bosnia where there are three factions fighting for superiority and the dallisgrass has formed the zone of separation between them.

Mowing low only discourages weeds in bermuda. Mowing low in St Aug increases weed pressure, disease and insect damage. If you want St Aug then I’d keep the hoc at 3 to 3.5. If you want centipede I wouldn’t do shite because it won’t grow much and is currently figuring out a way to die. If you want bermuda I would keep hoc at 1.5 to 2 inches. Bermuda loves to grow when mowed and low mowing encourages rapid growth. Rapid growth requires lots of water. Based on your current hoc it looks like you prefer St Aug.

Yes, you can apply Sedgehammer

Consider yourself lucky. I’m cutting this Tifway 419 Bermuda at 2” every two or three days and it’s green as hell. I’ve been using this stuff called NutriSolve - Liquid Soil Micronutrient (with 2% Iron) and lightly spreading this granular fertilizer called Humic Max 16-0-8 - Lebanon Country Club Fertilizer. One of the groundskeepers at the local golf course turned me on to this stuff. I spray 6 oz of the liquid per gallon every 2 weeks and fertilize with the granule every 30 days. The groundskeeper calls it spoon feeding. The heat has not bothered this yard whatsoever. I water it twice a week so it’s getting 1” over the course of 7 days. I use Celsius HG and Sedgehammer. Haven’t had to spray that stuff in 4 weeks and it doesn’t hurt to spray even if it’s 99 degrees outside. This combination the groundskeeper put me on is something I’ve never heard of, but I’ve been using it since April and the results are amazing.

I am watering like crazy right now, which I never do. I’m also cutting at about double the normal height on the mower. Grass is growing pretty slowly.
