Can anybody recommend a company to perform a compaction test on a house pad recently completed in the Livingston/Baton Rouge area? Also how about how much do they normally cost?

Mine was $450. My dirt guy used Alpha testing and inspection out of Hahnville. House pad is in Ascension.

eta: He also uses Gulf South engineering and testing but they had a 2 week wait.

You can buy the compaction testers for a couple hundred bucks online. The ones I have used have been pretty close

You can try Southern Earth Sciences 504-486-5595, I believe they have offices in BR as well. Depending on amount of tests run, its usually a few hundred bucks.

You're probably not going to get what you are looking for at this point, if you are testing the soil after it is already in place. Before the pad was in place was the site stripped of organics? Once stripped, did they run a proof roll? Was the fill dirt tested before placement? As they brought in the fill dirt, the dirt should have been tested in lifts, usually around every 8" of fill. To do it properly, all those things should have been addressed.

My dirt guy said he can tell by the tracks his truck makes in the soil.

If by truck, you mean triaxle dump truck loaded with soil. Then your are referring to a proof roll. That is a common method for testing the existing soils. Looks for overly wet or soft soils. Also, will look for pumping which is a sign of unstable dirt.
