Obviously any LSU varieties do well as they were bred using Celeste figs as they hold up well to our normally wet summers. But I know that there are others that should do well here like the Smith fig and Brown Turkey.

So where have you had success with fig varieties?

Both will do fine, LSU Purple is a very vigorous grower and Celeste is tried and true. The LSU purples figs get better as the tree ages. Be sure to let the Purple ripen fully for best flavor

Currently I have the following trees in ground: Violette de Bordeaux, LSU Scott's Black, LSU Scott's Yellow, LSU tiger, LSU Improved Celeste, Gulbun, Malta Black, and three regular Celeste trees that I took from cuttings from old family trees (one from each side of the family). I just started rooting cuttings of Smith, LSU Strawberry, White Madeira, Black Madeira KK, Col de Dame Mutante, and Noire de Barbentane. So far, they have all been excellent. The Gulbun and Scott's Yellow are both very good honey style figs and the Malta Black and Scott's Black are both very good dark berry figs. I haven't had any splitting this year. The Violette de Bordeaux is the only tree that didn't produce this year - it's a 2-year-old tree that has been in the ground since this Spring.

I currently have in ground:

LSU Purple
LSU Gold
LSU O’Rourke
VDB
Black Mission
Smith
Celeste
Improved Celeste
Kadota
Italian honey
Beer's Black
Tiger Panache
Brown Turkey
Native Black
MBVS
Olympian
Yellow long neck

Received figs from Olympian, LSU gold, and VDB. I also have a Native Black swelling now that should be ready soon. Of note is all my figs were planted this year with only the Black Mission being in ground last year, and it was neglected in last year's drought and heat. This year I have kept it watered and it has done great.

Very vigorous growers have been:

Brown Turkey
LSU Gold
LSU Purple
Celeste
O’Rourke

Honorable mention: Yellow long neck, as it hasn't been in ground long but it's still putting out new growth and I have a cutting that is leafing out as well.

My best long term success have been with Alma and Texas Everbearing figs.

Some dude at LSU ag convinced me some years back and he was right.

If you live in the Lafayette area and are looking for a Smith Fig tree Cane row nursery has some right now. I just picked up my 2nd one today. They had several.
