Going on year three at this house. Grass is centipede. Every year I’ve had spittlebugs like crazy. When I mow in the afternoon they’ll be 40 dead ones on top of the mower. They fly left and right when I mow or spray the grass for anything. I’ve never seen them this thick anywhere else I’ve lived.

I’ve also had issues with moles and armadillos so I’ve been nuking my yard each year with bifen granular and 24 hour grub killer. My neighbors yard next to mine is in rough fricking shape due to not treating for bugs I guess. The Dillos were peppering his yard this winter and mostly staying off mine. Here’s a shot from the side yard earlier this spring.

I feel like I’m doing ok staying ahead of the problem but is there something more I should be doing for the insane amount of spittlebugs? Or are they generally harmless and not the problem?

Spittlebigs won’t hurt your yard. But if you want to kill them Bifen works

Thanks I keep seeing different things. It’s almost disturbing how many fly out of the grass. I kill them every year but every year they seem to come back even more than before.

I can attest. Seeing a lot more spittle bugs in my lawn this year as well. I broadcast Talstar granules twice a year but may spray permethrin after this weeks rain to knock back the flying insects some.

I'm having the same problem in my yard. It makes it damn near impossible to hang out and enjoy your yard. I don't believe Talstar will kill them. I place Talstar out twice a year and they are always heavy in my yard. For some reason they are even heavier this year.

According to the following website, spittlebugs can damage your lawn and shrubs. They also tell you what chemicals are good to get rid of them. I'm going to follow the suggestions in this link.

Interesting read. I just spread bifen granules and have noticed quite a few dead bugs on the side walk and many more that seem drunk. The article talks about thatch. The worst part of my yard with the bugs is the part with the worst thatch (where my dog pees most frequently.).

My neighbors yard is now starting to turn yellow and brown. I’m really starting to wonder if they have killed his grass.

Seems as if the granules didn’t put a dent in the spittlebugs population. I’m currently watching a university of Hawaii video on spittlebug damage to their pasture lands. This video is freaking me out.

Can I spray liquid bifen now even though I put out granules recently? Will too much bifen damage the grass?

Here’s the link to the video:

a general note not directed to anyone in particular, but...if you are constantly chasing plant or insect “infestations” with regular soakings of toxic poisons you are making the imbalance that brought about the issue in the first place even worse

the natural world (yes even your lawn) is a balancing act, every part of it has a role. You don’t have to live with being overrun, you can nurture the balance that keeps that from happening and it’s called “biodiversity”

Sunday thoughts...

That’s fine and I’ve definitely heard this before....but they’ve been there since we moved in. They are just worse this year than ever.

They have destroyed my neighbors yard and I’ll be damned if I’ll let them kill mine. I fertilize minimally and cut often to minimize thatch. I’m not sure what else I can do to deter them. Pesticides are the only thing that has kept them from killing me out.

Why don’t you contact this AL extension specialist in entomology at Auburn for advice. It appears she may responsibly for turf insects, but if not she will surely direct you to the entomology specialist on campus or the county agent (of course be sure to provide her your location) that can best assist you. Just provide her all the info you’ve provided in this thread including photos.

She already responded. She recommended I treat them with liquid bifen. She said they probably have been building and exploded with the wet spring we had. She said to go ahead and spray them now and again in august as the ones in august lay eggs. That way they don’t build again.

She also said that centipede is especially susceptible to spittlebug infestations. I’ll add it to the list of reasons to not have centipede in the next house we buy.

Yeah, those little bastards are all over my yard and I believe they are doing or have done damage to my grass and shrubs. I have bare spots all over my yard. My shrubs which was once healthy and thriving are now looking like they are dying and shribbled up. I'll be spraying liquid bifen all over my yard after the next time I cut the grass. If you find something that works, please pass it along.

I would wait a couple of weeks between applications and they spray the liquid

I sprayed a light rate of bifen .25 oz per 1k last weekend and killed a good bit of them but I still have a lot.

I’m gonna hit them again at .5 oz per 1k next weekend.
