New home build and are doing stucco on columns. What is inside the core of the columns? Is it a square post or do I buy regular columns and stucco goes around that? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Typically a treated 4x4 or 6x6 depending on height and the stucco is put over a styrofoam veneer

Don't do stucco if in LA. That is so 2000ish. Have you driven through neighborhoods like Santa Maria lately. All the stucco is looking like shite.

My parents neighbor (house built in mid 90’s) removed stucco columns & replaced with really nice beams
House looks brand new & makes others around them look extremely dated

Concrete columns are the way to go

Just do stained 8x8 wood. or do the posts with the wood wraps.
Depending on style of course or do a wrap column.

I'd like to do this on my house, but the housing market is so crazy right now that this job is too small for anyone to be interested in doing...at a reasonable price of course.

Go concrete or fiberglass columns. Or wooden posts if it fits the look.

Future bird nests. The birds eat out the foam from the tops of the columns and make little nests.

was coming here to post this. Thankfully i dont have nay columns, but neighbor has 4 and the birds did exactly this. They are loud as crap and they fly over to my back patio and crap on everything. i helped him put bird glue on top of them. a few birds got stuck and died and the other birds just land on top of the dead birds and roost. gross. i hate birds

When we first bought our house, I couldn't for the life of me figure out why there was foam all over my front porch and garden! Finally got on a ladder and saw the reason. I cut some plywood to fit over the very top of my column where the birds had pulled out the foam. Problem solved.
Now that the wood is in place, every nest that a bird builds on top of the column just gets blown off by the wind.
I do respect the persistence of birds a lot more now (but also see how dumb they are).

I was surprised to find out stucco is currently the most expensive siding on new builds. I always assumed it was done because it was cheap.
