Curious if anyone here has had any success with Bermuda grass seed. Originally my yard had been sodded by the home builder with Bermuda tolerant to our Texas extreme temps but hates shade. I’ve replaced most of my front yard with Zoysia which I highly suggest for others having the same issues. Saying all that I do have some areas that I haven’t replaced the old Bermuda yet and get plenty of Sun but needs a little perking up with a little extra soil and maybe some seeding. Anyone have any success with Bermuda seed with the addition of some yard soil?
If so any suggestions on brands and or type of Bermuda and soil? That would be helpful and appreciated.

Without knowing what kind of Bermuda you have, it may be tough to find one that matches well with the grass you already have. There can be a pretty big difference between Bermuda types. My hybrid in the backyard looks almost like a completely different type of grass than the common bermuda I have in the front.

As far as soil, just making sure you go with top soil (not fill dirt or the bagged "top soil" you find in box stores) will go a long way. Depending on how big an area you need to fill in, go to your local garden center and get a scoop. Spread the seed, cover with some mulch like pine straw and water a couple of times a day and you should be fine.

I got my seed from Hancock Seed and had pretty good germ rate even though I had no clue what I was doing at the time.

Thanks for the suggestions I appreciate it. I kind of figured with my luck I'll buy the wrong type of Bermuda and have 3 types of grass in my front yard going. My whole goal was to have the Bermuda be over run by the Zoysia that I put down over the last 3 years in certain areas but looks like by the time that happens I'll be 6 feet deep. I mainly again just want to spruce up the small areas I still have Bermuda so it looks a little thicker.

Accurate post.

Since your Bermuda was sodded, it’s likely a hybrid variety that is not viable through seeds. So it won’t match, although it might be close enough to not care.

Hancock Seed has been very good for me. I’ve planted about 25,000 sqft of Bermuda seeds from them with a good success rate. I’ve used Arden 15 and Royal TXD, all at 2-3 lbs/1000 sqft.

Arden 15 is the way to go. Like ME said a true hybrid will not produce viable seeds ie the Tifway family of bermuda.

I noticed when I went to go pull the link up for the OP that Hancock doesn’t carry it anymore which surprised me. They only added it a couple years ago. I was planning on starting to convert the front yard and it was the closest thing to P77 that I have in the back.

You know of another good site to order from?
