Traditional tank water heater went out and we want to go back with tankless.
Any Recs would be appreciated.

No it was a tank style.

Mines in my attic. I hear people say not to do this because if something goes haywire they can cause bad water damage but this new system has all kinds of failsafes on it and it’s one of my favorite features of my house. We have 2 units for about a 4,000 sqft house.
I think it’s a Rinnai and it’s super easy to use. Highly recommend

I installed a Navien NPE-A2 series a few months ago to replace a tank water heater, it has a built in recirculation pump. LINK.
My BIL, a licensed master plumber, with me as his “helper”, installed it. He had not personally installed that brand before, but his brother, also a plumbing contractor in New Orleans, has been installing them and he and his customers have been happy with them, so that’s what I went with. That unit also can operate off a 1/2 inch gas line, and as I understand it most brands can not, though my BIL opted to install a larger gas line anyway as the larger gas line T-Union was only several feet away.
Mine is installed in attic at the location of the tank water heater, but they can can certainly installed outside.
So far so good. That’s all I got.
You looking for a gas unit?

Natural Gas, propane or electric?

Navien condensing tankless 100%. It is Wi-Fi compatible. Super easy install. Just installed a 240-A2 with recirc pump for a 3 bath house. Will work like a charm. Can also be mounted on an exterior wall.

We're not ready yet, but I look forward to gaining some garage space when we ditch the tank for one. What about power outages - do any of them either not require power (gas heat, maybe a backup analog thermostat) or have a backup battery type deal?

We had a tankless on our last house and made sure to have one on our new one. Three kids and a wife that washes clothes/dishes all day and loves to soak in a big tub doesnt leave much hot water. We have a navien on the one we are moving in to in a few weeks.

We had the Navien NPE-240S2 natural gas tankless water heater installed in our basement a month ago and really like it a lot. Also had a whole house water filter installed at the same time which should greatly reduce any scaling and subsequent maintenance on the tankless water heater, besides making the water healthier and chlorine free.

NPE-240A2, It can be installed with a 1/2" gas line, vents in pvc, same unit works with propane or natural gas, built in circ pump, indoor or outdoor install and Theyre reliable as hell. Just a solid unit.

I went from 2 50-gal tanks in the attic to a single Navien. It's been great.

Probably a dumb question, but why would you need wifi on a water heater?

It is a good question.
The Navien A2 series with built in recirculation pump, the WiFi option allows one to to activate the recirculation pump in external recirculation mode to give one “instantaneous” hot water when you need or want it. Otherwise the default option is the recirculation pump running 24/7, but the unit can also be programmed to have the pump run certain times of the day when hot water will be in highest demand (that is the feature I’m using), like morning or evening showers, and there is also an “intelligent” programming option whereby the water heater learns your hot water use over time and the recirculation pump will run automatically run in external mode at the times it anticipates your highest demand of hot water based on your history of hot water use.
So 4 options on how and when you can program the recirculation pump to work. Of course this is about energy savings - why have the recirculation pump running when you have no need for instantaneous hot water.
Lastly though, the WiFi feature of the Navien A2 is an add on feature that requires the purchase of additional hardware to be installed with the tankless to make that feature work, so you don’t have that function right out of the box with out incurring some additional hardware costs.

Your old tanks were electric or gas? Im thinking about doing the same thing.

And for the record I'm a smart house whore but I can't justify the wifi add on for this. It just doesn't do enough for me.
I have the smart recirculate option on and i only notice it when I take a shower in the afternoon or at night after working outside and it takes like 30 seconds for the hot water to arrive.
In the mornings you just jump in and go.

Love ours. Japanese brand that I can’t recall. They were leaders in the industry I think. Replaced 2 50 gallon tanks with 1 tankless unit. Delay in hot water to tap almost the same as with tanks we had. We didn’t go with a recirculating unit which I believe will give nearly instant. Cost 5 years ago about the same as putting in 2 new 50 gallon units.
