Did yardwork today and saw lot of small white moths fly up as I made my passes. I’m concerned because I’ve never really had these before. 1 or 2 maybe but not dozens.

Are these likely web worm moths? How screwed am I? Grass otherwise looks good out front with no noticeable damage.

Should I act now for prevention? How do I treat? Is it too late?

TIA

St Augustine. Nola metro area.

In past few weeks, I’ve seen maybe a small moth or two but didn’t really think anything of it.

Today was very noticeable. Maybe 20-30 or so.

I had all kind of little brown bugs flying around today when I cut and sitting on my walls when I got done. Almost looked like mosquitoes, maybe they were.

In my experience the tiny white moths are web worms. Had them a few years ago. The grass went bad shortly after

That’s sod webworm moths….if you catch a morning with dew, you will be able to see their webs.

Get some insecticide immediately, as they will wipe your lawn down to bare earth in just days.

Easy to kill OP. Its actually the larvae that eat your grass. The moths are just the adults that lay the eggs.

Throw anything you have as soon as possible.

Generally a granular is better because there are already eggs and the eggs may not hatch for a couple days when the spray has been washed away, and the cycle is repeated.

But I just spray every week or so with Talstar as that's what I have. Knocks them back until i get them under control.

Yes - July, August, September - look at this LSU AgCenter sod web worm fact sheet that has a calendar that shows when lawn injury is most prevalent. LINK

I’ve seen them over the last couple days. The larvae will be out soon, at which time I’ll destroy them before they do irrecoverable damage.
