Toilet Replacement

My master toilet is original (25 years old) and is terrible. It clogs very often flush, and otherwise takes two - three flushes. Any replacement recs? Or is this a matter of replacing the interior mechanisms only?

Newer toilets are much better. American standard has a Vormax toilet which is excellent . Toto has a similar one which also gets rave reviews. I watched a factory tour on this old house of the vormax toilet and was sold. Got one for the kids bathroom and haven’t had to clear a clog since it was put in over a year ago.

Most toilets work better than that, even the older ones.
Does it flush ok if you hold the handle down? May just be the flapper valve need to be replaced or adjusted. Also check the water level when the tank fills up. There is usually a line showing fill level.
Also check to make sure nothing is stuck in it, like a kids toy.

My Costco had a 1 piece with dual flush, and the no slam seat with wax ring/hose etc for 170 buck.
Same style toilet was 250+ at Home Depot/Lowes without the extras that will cost an additional 25 buck.

I highly recommend getting the higher ADA compliant toilets, even if you're younger.
Dual flush toilets are nice. I guess they save on your water bill, although I can't fully tell.
If you want to go a cheap route, yet have all the good features, there's one at Sam's Club for about $90 that includes everything: ADA toilet, elongated, slow closing lid, dual flush, wax ring, and I think even a supply line.
Otherwise, there are some at Lowes and Home Depot that are nice for about $125.

For the cost and age, it's better to replace with a newer, more efficient unit.
I replaced 2 of them in our +30 yr. old house with Am. Std units a few years ago without any problems. The rough-in was 10 or 11 inches and the new toilets were a little taller.

A plumber buddy of mine told me to try this when I had the same issue with an older toilet.
Take dishwashing liquid and squeeze a stream of it at the waterline in the toilet and let is start to run down the bowl a bit. Add a couple nice size clumps of toilet paper and then flush to see if it clears the bowl. If it does when doing that and not without the dish soap, you likely have a hairline crack somewhere in the bowl and need to replace the toilet.
I did that and the toilet worked fine, but without the dish soap, it wouldn't clear the bowl, so I installed a new toilet and all was fine.

I replaced the seal on an old toilet a few months ago because of a leak. If I had realized exactly how old it was, I would have found a brand new one but I was in a hurry - new renter was scheduled to move in that weekend.
Toilet was original to the house - there was not a wax sealon the toilet - it was sealed with plumbers putty that had dried out due to lack of use. After putting on a new wax seal, found that the flapper leaked as well. This thing had a metal fill pipe on it still. Was a PITA to replace - had to cut it off with a hack saw. After replacing everything that wasnt porcelain on the toilet it works great and still uses 5 gallona a flush like it was intended
. I should have just bought a new one from the beginning.

Replaced a couple at this house. I think the one in the upstairs bath was original to the late 1960s. It was a short one with a round bowl. Replaced with chair height and elongated bowl. Put something similar in my master bath downstairs. I had put in an American Standard, but it was getting some cracks at the tank to bowl connection. Replaced with a cheap one with the old style flapper and it is great. All of the dual flush and power flush type flappers are just more things to break.

I replaced my old school huge tank toilet with an American Standard dual flush and my water usage decreased by 25%

$139 at Costco
* soft close lid
* one button seat removal, boom. rinse it off and wipe the back of the toliet & put it back on in like 10 seconds
* dual flush (most of the time the 'small' flush takes care of my poop)
* extra tall so my 6'1" arse can sit & get up comfortably.
* one piece design including tank so a whole lot less to go wrong.
* embarrassingly easy to install since you don't have to install and assemble the tank & flushing doodads separately and risk leaks or connecting the shite wrong.
all you need to install is included and toliet COMES FULLY ASSEMBLED. you just set the ring and screws properly, drop the toliet on top and connect the water line. ridiculous. i'll never buy another 2 piece toliet again.
i'm replacing every toliet in my house with these as i remodel the bathrooms and i fricking love them.
its the perfect toliet and you can't beat the price. most comfortable toliet i've ever sat on and i like the 'bonus flush' when i need it can happen right away instead of waiting for the tank to refill with water first.

Ha. Reminds me of a summer job I had right after High School. Worked for this place called Bell Supply, but we all called it Hell Supply. Typical plumbing and HVAC supply place. We stacked pipe, loaded water heaters, tubs, showers, and toilets into the warehouse, and pulled things for deliveries. There were maybe 4 or 5 of us hired for Summer help, and I guess they let the warehouse go to shite all year and used the few months of cheap labor to get it back in order every June. We were basically emptying shelves, and putting things back in a decent manner. This was summer of 1999, and we came across some old toilets and there was a date stamp on there from the mid-80s. Asked the boss if we should toss them or put them back. He said open them up and if they're broken, chunk them in the dumpster, but if they were still good, put all the old stuff in this one corner of the place. There were yellow ones, green ones, and blue ones, along with some black and white ones. The blue was this light powder blue, similar to the Chargers powder blue uniforms. Some guy said it looked like it belonged in the background of a 70s porno, so the rest of the summer we of course referred to that as the porno blue toilet.

So update - my dad (former lifelong contractor) checked it out today. Apparently I may be having a pipe issue, as the master shower, toilet, and water spout on the outside wall directly behind the toilet, have low pressure. We’re going to do a deep dive into the problem after the Labor Day weekend.
