tree stump removals

hey guys, the wife and I bought our 1st house recently, and the backyard was massively overgrown with trees down and overgrowth and vines.
we have cleaned a great deal of it out the last month or so, but int he course of cleaning it up we have found several tree stumps of varying size that I need to get out - the issue is, the back yard is on a hill with a retaining wall at the bottom, so a stump grinder is gonna be near impossible to get up there.
i thought about trying to dig around it, and to use a chainsaw to cut the roots and try and dig them out that way, but was curious if anyone had suggestions of alternatives to try.
i do not want to use chemicals if i can avoid it, as I want to clean it up and put grass down, or make a garden.

How far from flat ground is the stump?

Burn them. Spread the ash.

This. That’s your best bet OP. They need to be well dead so they are dried out. But you basically just take a bag of charcoal and set it on top of the stump and let it burn down.

With a fan blowing on it

I wouldn't use a chain saw to cut the roots because you will lose the edge once it hits the dirt.

burn them as noted or build beds around them and let them rot

This. Messed up a chainsaw cutting roots in a fell tree. Chainsaw didn’t even go into the ground, but the roots had enough mud to screw everything up. Burned through the oil, had to replace the chain (ended up replacing the blade since I already dismantled) and had to spend a ridiculous amount of time cleaning out mud and excess oil.
If it’s not too big, you may be able to go to work on it with a long sawzall blade, shovel & pickaxe. But, burning will most likely be the best route

a sawzall with a long blade works ok to cut medium size roots in the dirt.

You can also drill holes in the stump, pour epson salt on to it then spray with water

thx guys - the stumps have been there likely for years - i know the previous owner died in 2021, and we got it end of last year. i suspect the trees have been gone even longer since then.
will try the burning method and see how it goes.

removing (especially burning) green stumps is tough work. have you considered renting a stump grinder from home depot?
