TV on patio

so with the completion of my outdoor patio, i'm now ready to get some furniture and put a TV out there. i know there are like outdoor-grade televisions, but those are pretty expensive. what has been everyone's experience with using normal indoor TVs outside? it will be protected from the elements directly, but obviously exposed to larger temp changes and humidity. is it just a case of buy the cheapest one at the size you want and replace it every few years?

That was my plan when I put one outside almost 10 years ago, but I've never had to replace it. Not sure where you're located, but the south La heat and humidity hasn't killed mine yet.

That, or if you want to upgrade your living room TV, move it outside.

Yeah the general consensus is to get a cheap TCL or comparable smart TV and replace when it dies, which is not as often as you’d think.
Only problem I’ve had (and I don’t even cover mine because it’s too high and a pain in the butt to get the ladder out) is the remote barely works. Have to go up to the TV with it, but I mainly watch sports so it stays on the same channel, I just can’t flip back and forth without getting up. Probably just the Roku remote.
Anyone else have this problem? Pretty sure it’s just the remote and not the sensor so I should buy a new one.

yeah i just repalced my living room TV, so i have an extra now.
is there any technology that fares better outside? i've literally got an old plasma, an old LCD, and a newer LED to choose from.

Probably want whichever is brightest.

Clean the remote sensor on the TV

I purchased a cheap and large TCL from Costco with the extended warranty plan. Kept it covered with a cover from Amazon. 2-3 years in, the IR sensor on the TV went out and extended warranty company cut me a check for full replacement value of the TV. Bought a second TV with the warranty money, then bought a new IR sensor on ebay for $8 shipped and easily fixed original TV.
I told warranty/insurer over the phone exactly what the problem was along with cost of the replacement part, and they still cut me a check for the replacement cost.
So I'd say that's a winning strategy for TVs on the patio.

We use a 55 inch Walmart cheapo. It is on a long arm swivel mount to face patio or pool or spa. True outdoor TVs may be too heavy to do that with. We used to swivel it further inside the covered area or use a TV cover but that looked goofy and was a pain so now it rests bare, center mount maybe 18” inside of covered patio at the edge. No problems ever. Probably 3-4 years old now. I would have been happy with two years.

This is my setup as well. TCL that's been on my patio since I built my pool in 2019.
Recently added a soundbar holder to the bottom of it, which really helps with the audio, especially when my water features are running in the pool.

We Bluetooth to a portable speaker.

Definitely go with a cheaper brand - TCL, Hisense, etc. and replace as needed. I've had my TCL under my covered patio for 3 years now and it's still going strong.

Bought an insignia 55” from Best Buy in 2021. Covered patio but I never cover the TV. So far so good

thanks all. sounds like my plan of just throwing any old thing out there for now is good enough.

We put a 55 inch Hisense Roku tv under our patio 5 years ago. Always intended on getting a cover for it but never did. Never needed to. Still works like a champ.

Cheapest TV in the size you want. Ive had them outdoors for years and have never had a problem. I keep a weatherproof cover on them just to keep the afternoon sun and any wind blown rain off but I just pull it off when Im ready to use it.

Try to get a matte type screen that reduces glare.
