Mine just went out, and I’m having to replace. Anybody got any brand recommendations? I don’t want to spend a fortune if I don’t have to, but don’t want to buy a 3 year appliance either

What type of ice do you want?

Wife wants the pellet ice and it makes a big difference in price and brand from what I’m seeing.

Just the cubes would be fine. Paying extra for the pellet/Sonic ice isn’t something that’s important to me

What broke? Ice makers are pretty simple machines

If you want the best then get a Hoshizaki. They make the Sonic ice. We have these in our office and a dude comes in every quarter to service it.

I’ve had good luck with Summit and Marvel as well.

I’ve had a Scotsman for close to 10 years without any major problems

Not easy to fix at all. Kitchen aid here and mine is currently under repair also. If yours is 18 inches wide you have more opinions to replace it. 15 inches wide your options are more limited.

Uline makes very durable machines. They need to be installed very level in both directions though.

We have a Whirlpool 15" it's pretty easy to work on. I have replaced the drain pump and the water solenoid. The freezing tray and cutting grid are easy to get to but those two items the parts are spendy. Freezing tray is $400 and cutting grid is $200

It seems the panel is out. It’s a 10 year old machine so I’m not hopeful

those machines have a low voltage transformer and cost between 1600 and 2400 to replace. probably worth the cost of having a qualified technician diagnose it, not Sears and ask how familiar the company is with undercounted ice machines.

Did the seller pay for a 1 year home warranty as part to the sell?

Hoshizaki and Scotsman are the brands others are judged by. I went with Hoshizaki and have had great luck but this thread, and the number of people with issues, is scaring me.

Scotsman 15 inch under counter icemaker is not anywhere near the same quality as hosisaki. Kitchenaid comes with a 3 yr complete warranty and usually is durable if you water is not real hard.

Negative

We approached this couple to buy the house. We didn’t have any leverage in the deal.

scotsman makes the true sonic ice. Hoshizaki makes a similar nugget ice but it is harder and not as chewable.

Well I’ve accepted that I’ll have to spend $2k to get a long term solution.

Researching which is quieter now

This is true. I researched like hell and everything said Hoshizaki is the best quality machine. I bought one, my parents bought a Scotsman. Both are 2 years old with no issues. The Scotsman ice is more similar to Sonic, it is a little softer. There is nothing wrong with the pellets made by my Hoshi, but they are a little stiffer than Sonic. I actually prefer it because it holds up longer in a drink.
