Ventless gas fireplace logs

So I have this old gas fireplace that I've never used (I took out the old logs 10 years ago when we moved here), but with this cold weather, I dug out the old logs and hooked them back up and its running well, but the logs are quite old and ugly.
I'm thinking about giving this thing some new life, so what are the things to look for with ventless gas fireplace logs? BTUs? Wireless? etc.
Or just any recs in general.

Depends on how much you want to spend. They get expensive quick. Almost all of them will put out a ton of heat, so unless you need some specific heat value, BTUs aren’t critical (at least to me).
Some have thermostats, which are nice. It’ll turn them down to just pilot when it gets too hot in the room, and back up when it cools off.
I’d look for the millivolt lighting system. It’s just a switch to turn them on (after pilot is lit) vs having to mess with the switches/controls usually hidden under the logs.
Other than that, looks. The fake rocks and glowing wool and better looking logs all cost a lot more. My first house had a cheap set from HD, and you could tell. I bought a nicer set from Woodburners in BR this time.

I have a real fire place with gas run to it. Reading up, it seems like ventless puts out more heat than vented.
How much heat do vented ones put out by comparison? Can I just use a ventless one and leave my flue closed? Which looks better/more real? Budget $1000-$1500

Granted I am in Georgia so prices may vary between states, but we had a nice set put in that has a remote control but not a thermostat and I think we paid around 650 with install. We do not have natural gas in my neighborhood so mine are LP. They will keep the downstairs to our house warm when we need them and we do not have a blower hooked up. They also heat the upstairs fairly well. I am not sure what the exact BTU's are at the moment but they are really sized more for the fireplace insert than for their BTU in my case.
Edited to add that we have the ventless logs

They're not cheap. We saved by not going with the remote one. We leave the pilot light on and just turn a knob to light. It's ventless and will heat up the entire living room. You'll have to measure the width of your fireplace. We got ours at Bush's fireplace in Lafayette.

I have a ventless gas with no flue and it pumps out insane heat.
I was so worried about carbon monoxide so I put detectors all over the room and they haven't gone off.
It's 10 degrees outside and it warms my 3600 sq ft house so much the HVAC is barely having to work. Pretty frickin' awesome.

This was a pic from the floor model. We got ours at Busch, they have a nice selection and are knowledgeable. Not cheap like others have said but you get what you pay for. The remote start is a must

This is a pic of mine from Xmas time

Serious question. Bought this house about 2 1/2 years ago. 3rd winter here. House has ventless gas fireplace. I don’t think it’s ever been turned on since the house was built. I’m confused how this is safe? Ventless gas seems like a disaster waiting to happen

How? I have no idea but it puts out a shite load of heat and has never set off any carbon monoxide detectors so I roll with it.

Hey perrydawg I have a farm in appling county and looking to do something similar in our upstairs master. We currently have neither type gas on the property. I'm assuming for that type of usage we'd need to have a large lp tank brought out and set beside the house?
I'd been meaning to start a topic on this and ask a couple questions, but I'm probably a year away from messing with it

this is what we are working with right now
will probably paint the inside black and will need to get a screen or something
and yeah, it definitely seems like the price range on these runs anywhere from $300 to $1000+
probably don't want the cheap ones, but I doubt I'm going to drop $1k on this

Gotcha. Yeah I’m sure it could be done... Just depends what you wanted to spend. We use ours pretty much every day when it’s cold.

this is in our front living room, and before kids we never used the room, but now as our kids age, they are starting to use the back den and my wife and I find ourselves retreating to here for quiet and peace
a little mood fire wouldn't hurt at times
it will probably be a next fall project, but I'm definitely putting it on the list of things to do

Yeah we put it off for a few years due to the Cost but ended up treating ourselves this past Christmas.

We just have a 100 gallon propane tank that we bought from our propane supplier which is who we got the gas logs from. I might use half a tank per winter being that we are in Houston County so we do not run it continuously. My home already had the propane line ran to the fireplace, so all they had to do was set the tank and hook up the supply line. I believe we rent the tank on annual basis for like 50 bucks a year.

Thanks for the info bud. Something I'll definitely be checking into before long

I just returned from Woodburners fireplace store (Baton Rouge) because I had this same question as I want to add a good set of ceramic logs to my fireplace, and personally had more interest in the ventless logs vs the vented logs.
The person that waited on me said they do not recommend ventless ceramic logs in fireplace units not designed for these logs even if you close the flue - concerns with the mantle etc. So he gave me the literature to look at on vented logs to make a decision on. He did say adding remote ignition unit adds roughly $500 to the cost,
Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread - useful and informative info.

The remote control is nice.
I bought the most expensive set of Peterson Realfyre logs they had at Fireplace Specialties, mainly because I liked the appearance and they get good reviews.
I have visited the homes of two relatives who bought cheap sets at Lowes or similar. Frankly, their cheap ones work just as well, if not better in some ways, than my expensive ones.
They smell like shite at first. Have to crank the fire wide open and burn it for hours to get rid of the chemical smell. (I opened the flue for those sessions.)
