I’m planning to redo some shelving in several closets and would like to have a great tool to find studs behind drywall.

The Walabot caught my attention. Does it work as well as advertised? Is there a better tool?

Love my Franklin Sensors one. No beeping, clear as can be with where and how wide a stud is.

I bought one from Amazon that has different material and thickness settings, BUT an old carpenter taught me this and I do it to confirm my layouts: just look for the fish eyes in the baseboard, as that’s where we typically nail the baseboard at. Then I’ll take an angle trim nail and tap in to confirm the stud locations on the wall. Just make sure you have your cleats for the rod holders secured well into 2 studs.

Just use a magnet to find the screws.

Franklin sensors are by far the best I've used so far. I've tried all kinds from Stanley, Zircon and Bosch. I am thinking about getting the Franklin Prosensor Max, nothing wrong with my current one but I am flush with Lowe's giftcards...

I have a zircon and it is only somewhat effective. It is very easy to use, but sometimes misses on the edges of the studs. I can pretty much always find the middle to put a screw or nail in though.

He’s talking about drywall screws.

A good neodymium magnet to find a drywall screw, then the Frannklin tool which gives you a representation of each edge and the middle of the stud using the led lights - that a good measuring tape and awareness of where the outlet boxes are (if applicable) will pretty much set you up.

I would rather use the stud finder. Hate assuming whoever did the work before did it correctly and the screws, nails, whatever are where they should be.

That's why I use them too, I have a Stud Buddy magnet but it the drywall nail or screw missed just off the edge of the stud or just caught the edge then it's a problem, especially when running larger hardware for a TV mount.

I just use my knuckle, and it's free and very accurate.

I have the Walabot. Works great on drywall. I can see the studs, pvc pipes as well as electrical wires. Not certain it would work on rock.

I have the original and it was pretty handy when rebuilding after the '16 flood.
