I have had the opposite experience. Speed queen has been solid for us since 2016.
This is what everyone tells me, even repair people. Makes me feel like I’m taking crazy pills.

We bought them when all the kids were still at home so they’ve gotten a lot of use, but on the dryer we’ve had a broken knob, heating element went out, the gasket on the door needed to be replaced, the air vent on the back of the drum cracked and I just replaced the belt and pulley. Washer has faired better but I had the belt and tensioner pulley replaced on it as well.
Maybe we just got a couple duds. I’m a believer in paying more for quality but not sure it worked out for us this time.

We bought our model when they announced the next ones would have lid locks and water restrictions. We have moved then 3 times (due to the flood and moving out of state) and my washer now has a dent in the front but I am keeping it as long as it lasts.

I had the old set of white Kenmores that I bought like 20 years ago and they ran like champs until the washer started getting rust on clothes. Wife insisted on new stuff.
So we went and got talked into Electrolux front loaders by a guy at a high end appliance store. I was very reluctant because of horror stories and price. But I’ve got to say that 2 years in we are very happy with them. No quality issues on either and they are very quiet.
Now that I’ve posted this I’ll probably start having issues.

Washer = Top Load with an agitator. The cheapest larger capacity you can find at the Home Depot.
Dryer = The cheapest larger capacity you can find at the Home Depot.

How many people reading this saw their brand up here and were saying to themselves, "actually, mine has done just fine for many years."
And now are thinking, "oh frick, I just jinxed it"

Speed Queen is the way to go. Don't buy the combo or front end loader. Go with the old school top loader.

and LG..
Their electronics are great but their appliances suck...
We have a GE High Efficiency washer and dryer. It's not the top end nor the low end, and they've been great for the past three years. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles but it does what it's supposed to do, wash and dry clothes. Little over a K for the set. I've seen some of these high end model W/D that sell for 1,500 to 2,500 for just one or the other . Frick that. They wash and dry clothes....

Just buy a Speed Queen, and be done with it. Doesn't come with all the fancy gadgetry and lights, but will last you forever.

My children have the GE toploader set. The newer one with the clear lid. Looks fancier but is the same as the white set. Not expensive and doing fine washing grandkids and hunting/fishing clothes.

Everyone I know with a front load washer has had their main board go out on them…it costs more to fix them than get a new one. The more expensive they are, the shittier they are. I’m sticking with my old top loader
Happened to us a couple of months ago. Surprisingly wasn't the bad of a DIY repair. The hard part was finding repair instructions online. GE must send cease and desist and copyright infringement letters like spam.
There's a solid diagnostics mode that you can activate by pressing "Temp>Time Delay>Temp>Time Delay." Then you can narrow down what's wrong and try to fix it yourself.
There's a good chance that it's not the main control board ($150-200 part, and a more complex installation) but the inverter control board ($40 part on eBay, 10 minute installation). Didn't have to remove the drum or mess with the motor outside of unplugging the wires from between the inverter control board and motor.

Eta: The GE washer/dryer came with the house when we bought. I think they were manufactured in 2018.

Damn this board...I am in the same boat.
I bought el cheapo Roper about 7-8 years ago and it died yesterday.
It looks like the agitator or drive belt is broken.
Didn't have time to diagnose. If it is the drive belt it is an easy fix. If it is something else, I will probably get a new one.

We have had Maytag washer (top loader) & dryer since 2016 and no issues at all & still very quiet.

Have to get a new washer and dryer. What brands should we stay away from?
They all suck. Buying the from the Lowes/Home Depot/Conns/Best Buys of the world also suck.
Go cheapest you can get because when they go out, they are throw away. You can't get them repaired.
Do NOT buy the warranty, especially from Assurant (sp?).
Top Load. No electronics if you can find them.
I have no experience with Speed Queen, but most people that have them love them.
The Maytags/Kenmores/Whirlpools/GEs/LGs/Samsungs of the world all use direct drive systems and they will fail. If you are lucky, you'll get 3-5 years out of them.

If you’re not spending speed queen money, get an LG.
Had an appliance repair guy come out to take a look at my busted arse
GE washing machine that was more expensive to fix than replace and he told me to go buy the cheapest basic model LG washing machine I could find. Been great so far, but I bought a 5 year warranty with it cause it seems like I replace one every 2 years.

The worst thing I ever did was get rid of my old washer and dryer from the early 2000’s. I left them with a house when I sold it. What a mistake that was.

We got this because our washer/dryer space was very limited and this was a bit easier to store than stacking two separate units.
LG - 5.0 Cu. Ft. HE Smart Front Load Washer and 7.4 Cu. Ft. Electric Dryer WashTower with Steam and Center Control - Black Steel
We love it. Have had it for almost two years and zero complaints. It does not have the bad smells that standard front loaders have. It dries fairly well. Washes very well. It's quiet.
I don't get the Speed Queen fanboy mentality. Front loaders are better for your clothing and more efficient with your water/electricity. They work fine. You can find a bad top loader washer just as easily as a front loading washer. You're talking about machines that run water, run a very hot heating element, spin and shake. It should be no surprise if something breaks. Just don't overload your washer and don't overload your dryer.
That being said, do NOT buy a Samsung unless it's a phone or TV.
