Watering yard with a sprinkler, how much time in one spot?

Don’t have automatic sprinklers, just the one that shoots out streams of water and goes back and forth like a fan

I’ve always heard to water deeply once a week or so instead of watering 3-4 times a week to encourage the grass roots to grow deep. I have to move the sprinkler about 6 times to cover the entire yard.

My question is, How long do y’all recommend leaving it in one spot before moving to the next area?

How long does your sprinkler take to put out a 1/2 to an inch of water?

Put an empty tuna can where you're watering and turn it off once it's full.

Subtle "I have a big yard" brag.

Seriously, though it also depends on how dry the yard is to start with, I usually put mine out for an hour to an hour and a half each coverage section.

The tuna can method is also a good way to gauge how much it's getting.

It’s really not that big. I could prob get it done in 4 switches but I’d rather overlap areas than miss some

Yep set up a pan and when it reaches that level , move it. You will learn the timing. If you want a great green yard consistently, installed sprinklers on timers is great

3 times a week at about 20 to 25 minutes should be good according to my yard guy.

Good ole Mother Nature has taken care of that this summer, so far. No watering needed.

IMO..... a tuna can is kind of small to get accurate information. Maybe use something like a cake baking pan. I would also put out two in different spot to see if all areas get the same amount of watering.

If the ground is really dry, it will probably need an hour or longer to water it good.

20 years ago we had a couple of those type sprinkler and stopped using them because they would stop moving back and forth (sp?).

If your sprinkler covers a large area, you’d be surprised how long it takes to actually get an inch of water. I have some impact sprinklers that take over 2 hours to put out 3/4” or so. Use the tuna can (baking sheet, Tupperware, whatever) method as others have said. General rule of thumb is 1” of water per week (which includes rainfall).
