What color mulch do you prefer/use in your flowerbeds...red, brown, or black?

For those that use colored mulch. We've always used brown for everything, but lately I've seen some pictures of flowerbeds with black mulch and it looks really sharp. We were thinking about using it this year around some of the beds in our back yard around our pool area, which is a gunite pool with oklahoma stone coping mixed in with a kahlua creme deck color. I think it would look great, but haven't ever used the black mulch before. I'm sure it will fade quickly just like other colored mulches. Below are some examples (not my house) of black mulch flowerbeds I found...although the first one looks more like a very dark brown. Anyways, what do you guys think? What color mulch do you guys prefer?
ETA: Also, just a heads up for y'all that plan on laying mulch down soon. I did verify with one of the Home Depot managers that starting next Thursday April 4th, Home Depot will be doing their "Spring Black Friday" sale and the mulch will most likely be 5 bags for $10 like last year.

I have a few questions about the rocks next to your house
1. Where did you get them?
2. How deep are they?
3. How wide are they front to back? Ie edge to house.
4. Do you have anything underneath the rocks like weed barrier?
5. Does it go all around the back and sides of your house?
6. Can I get more picks of your rock setup?

See the ETA on my original post. Home Depot will be doing a Spring Black Friday sale starting next Thursday April 4th and their mulch will be included (most likely 5 bags for $10 like last year).

Hey sorry man, but that's some random web pics I posted of flowerbeds with black mulch...not my house.

Thanks! Saved me a week.

Depends on the house. The brown mulch looks best at my house so I go with that.

You're going to have that black coloring leaching off the mulch and all around your nice pretty kahlua deck. But after the first rain or two, the color will be gone. Colored mulch is worthless and usually is chopped up wood or old pallets of some sort mixed in.
I personally prefer a natural finely shredded hardwood mulch. because even when it decays, fades or whatever, you know what it looks like? natural and not some faded color shredded lumber.

1. Where did you get them?
In texas it's 3"-5" river wash or in Houston, (bullrock)
2. How deep are they?
4-6"
3. How wide are they front to back? Ie edge to house.
Do you have gutter? yes, approx 12". No gutters, beyond dripline
4. Do you have anything underneath the rocks like weed barrier?
You will want a filter fabric of some sort.
5. Does it go all around the back and sides of your house?
It can but be careful to not trap water.

The dyed mulch is full of chemicals and is typically chopped up pallets/lumber that has been previously treated.
Double ground hardwood or pine mulch has the most benefits for plants/soil chemistry.

To each their own. We used the brown colored mulch last year and it held its looks through to winter. We will be using again.

Please stop using colored mulch people. It isn’t natural or pretty unless you want your house to look like a McDonald’s.
Getting brown colored mulch defeats the purpose. Just by regular hardwood mulch. It’s brown.

wrong...none of the bagged colored mulch at the big boxes use treated or pallet wood...mostly wood waste from lumber mills...and the colorants used to color wood mulch has less voc's and metals than are allowed in bagged soil/potting mixes

I agree with this. Dyed mulch is terrible. And terrible for your soil.
