What kind of paint to put on exterior facing doors?

wife wants black/caviar and I'm not fighting her on it, but I know it'll fade more. One exterior door is composite/fiberglass material and the other is wood.

What kinds of paint are best? I would ask Sherwin Williams but last few times I've done that the stoned high school kid behind the counter thought I was speaking Mandarin.

Assuming I need two different paint types for the two different types of door?

Oil base if you want it to last
Ext Latex if you wanna paint it every 2-3 years

Satin or Semi-Gloss

Black is going to suck, especially if exposed to direct sunlight. It will get hot as hell in the summer months if you live in the deep south and get direct sun.

It will also show dust and street dirt a lot easier being a dark color, just like a black car will.

I've had great success with Sherwin Williams paints over the years and have painted many houses other than my own with it. I use the exterior latex in a semi-gloss finish for a little sheen and that helps it clean up easier------much easier than a flat exterior paint for sure.

But, no matter what paint you go with, the end result is only as good as the prep work you put into it prior to applying paint.

You can certainly paint it black. I had black doors and shutters on the east side of my house for years. It will collect dust, just wash them with cold water and simple green every so often.
Use the best quality 100% acrylic latex (satin/semi-gloss/gloss) you can afford. That's the key to your fading issue. All exterior paint fades, the better ones fade evenly, not splotchy. That's important.
Personally, I would stay far away from oil. They are prone to chalking, fading, and mildew. Today's acrylic latexes are far superior.

It does get direct sun for a couple hours every day in the Summer. I am outside Chattanooga, so not deep South, but not the North either.

We have a storm door with UV glass, but it is ugly as sin so I took it off. I'd rather paint it every few years and clean in a couple times a month than have that ugly thing on there.

We actually were thinking gloss, not semi-gloss. Interior designer friend who has great taste said shiny doors are "in" so my wife is all about it. Maybe I can get her to settle on semi-gloss.

I think I'll go with the 100% acrylic latex from Sherwin Williams and see how that goes. I have the same color paint in an oil base that we used on our dining room table - but you've scared me off using that.

As always, thanks guys.

Painting my front door now, using Sherwin Williams latex semigloss. Painting a door is harder than I thought.

I had a black steel door that faced due west and never noticed any inside heat. Those things are pretty damn insulated.

Check your warranty on the fiberglass door. Some don’t warranty with dark paints.
