In a perfect world, with more money for the backyard reno, we'd do blue stone like this, but it is, all in, about 380 sq. ft

What other stone options are there that are cheaper and still look good? Also, has anyone done a stained concrete patio?

You can look into stamped concrete.

if it was new concrete i would advise doing a very light grey/blue integral mix coloring and then score it to look like blue stone joints.

since its as is, you really can't do a whole lot other than a topical stain which looks like shite

talk to a stone yard and tell them what you're thinking. they can likely provide you some alternatives to blue stone.

Look into Limestone as well

Yeah figured.

I really want bluestone, but if my calculations are right, that is exorbitantly priced. Talking $10k+ easily with labor.

Previous owner didn't take care the concrete at all either so it currently looks like shite. Stains, cracks, etc. I can fix the stains, but honestly would rather just cover everything up.

Maybe I can look into limestone tile or something. But I don't think that is as durable and my kids are going to do god knows what out there.

Don't do something that's just ok. Do it how you want it or don't do it at all. You're going to be living with that shite .If i couldn't find a material that i liked opposite blue stone, id save the money and buy bluestone.

Also what would it cost you to tear it out, repour and score and stain with a like integral mix?

consult a stone yard. there are options

I think I saw bluestone tiles on an episode of TOH a few years back, which would be much more affordable than pavers, and are an option for you since you already have a concrete pad to support/install. There are also slate tiles available in many hues. Make sure you go honed so you don’t end up with a slip and slide instead of a patio.

I bit the bullet and called a landscape architect that was recommended. Coming over this weekend to check it out. I'll keep all the info in this thread in mind when talking with him.

Thanks

I have slate tile for mine and like it a lot. Picked cheap slate tiles at the flooring store (under $2/sq ft - I think it was like $1.50) and did my whole back patio in it. Half covered, half exposed. A few layers of slate have flaked away on a couple of the tiles, but overall, it is holding up remarkably well after 7 years and still looks good.

Would you mind posting a picture? I'd love to hear more and see what it looks like. No big deal if it's too much a pain in the arse

Did you do it yourself? I'd love if I could cut some cost that way, the labor is where they get you. But I have precisely zero experience laying tile. Always outsourced that job in bathrooms and such.

I can post pics when I get home this evening. It was installed professionally when we built our house about 7 years ago. I just picked it out.

I know you asked for stone options but our concrete patio was shifting an no longer level we covered it with a ground-level deck. Lumber prices lately might make that prohibitive but after we did it we wondered why we didn't do it sooner.

This isn't ours, but very similar:

Be warned, stone is slippery as all hell when it gets wet.

I hare to ask but is it slippery when wet? We have an area that stays nasty from rain and I’m thinking gutters could help oraybe covering the concert with something like this as it’s easier to clean than the concrete.

No, it's not actually. No worse than wet concrete. And I've never had any issues with algae build up either. A little here or there, but I spot pressure wash it ever summer or two. No issues with it at all.

To the OP, you could overlay the concrete with pavers as well.
