What to use for leveling a lawn?

Will bags of top soil work? There's a small dips/holes in my front yard that I'd like to fill.
I bought this house last summer and it's the first time I've owned a home in a neighborhood where I give half a crap about what the lawn looks like. The previous owners didn't give a flip about it. I've heavily trimmed back trees to let sun in and I've identified fescue, st Aug, centipede, and a million weeds. My free time has been spent standing outside watching for when the weed and feed starts working.
Thanks

Small areas - Sand. Bags of “top soil” sold at box stores and many retail garden center are not mineral soil at all but rather are composted forested product (organic material, compost) that will decompose over time and not permanently fill in low spots.

So if the divots and declivities are deep enough, should I (and presumably OP) fill with sand and then top with sod?

If you add no more than 2 inches of sand at a time, the grass should grow through it, when the grass grows through you can add additional sand, never exceeding 2 inches per application.
Now the 2 inches max depth, comes as a recommendation from a every experienced and widely respected LSU AgCenter horticultural extension specialist, some on this board say that’s too deep, so you could go 1 inch, let the grass grow through, repeat all summer until the spots are leveled out.
What type of grass?

Thanks, good explanation. I figured there was a reason that I see folks using sand.

To get the lawn looking good in one season, hire a professional yard sprayer/fertilizer. Mine costs $50/6 times per year (I only pay for the front). Hire a local guy who knows what he is doing, not a national company. After the first year or two, you can stop service as your lawn will be in great shape.

Good advice but that doesn’t level the yard.

Can play sand be used or do you need mason sand?

Just wanna say this board is one of the most useful boards on this entire website. Much appreciation to the many contributors here as I've learned and applied many tricks due to this place. Anyway,
I also need to do this same thing to a few spots in my yard

Interdasting. Never knew that.

I used sand at my old house and it got hard as rock. The grass never grew through it.

Adding sand to clay soils can do that. Mix sand with topsoil in a wheelbarrow and spread.

One might wonder if this were not sand. Possibly field dirt sold as sand?

"play sand" and mason sand are basically the same thing...they are manufactured products (mechanically crushed, not wild harvested). however you will spend a lot more money buying 50lb bags of play sand than you will calling a bulk supplier and having a load of mason sand delivered

I filled in a low spot in my yard with 2” of mason sand. My yard is heavy clay. Grass filled in just fine.

I like to mix mason sand with some potting soil. 70/30 mix sand to soil

Unless you slip him an extra twenty to bring a bag of sand.
