The valve attached to the flush handle or the float?

Looks like a canister flush valve. I believe it comes with a typical Kohler, and possibly other brands of toilets.

Inside of the tank says “American standard”, but I can’t say I have ever seen anything like that…

American Standard, think it's their own large flush valve (4"?) so it has its own parts. I have put two new models in my house and they do ok for low-water-use things.

I refer to it as a Mansfield flush valve because all of the toilets(4) in my house are Mansfield and had them. I have since changed out three of them and now I am waiting for the fourth to fail before it gets changed out.
The one in your picture looks like an older model compared to the fill valve.

I have a similar one in our guest bathroom. It's super slow but will work. I'll get a pic after putting Baby BTB to bed.
update:
Yes I probably need to buy a new one but it works. Replaced the fill valve a few weeks ago because it kept making a whistling noise and I broke it when trying to fix it.
