What's the best way to get rid of oak trees sprouting in flower beds?

These things just don't want to come out. It seems like they are bolted down under the soil and come right back if you cut them

Snips and a medicine dropper with glyphosate. Cut them close to the ground, then intermediately put a few drops on the fresh cut. I agree that they're some son of a bitches to try and pull up at times.

Got to pull them up. Not to bad if they are young. Blame the squirrels.

My sprouts aren’t from squirrels burying nuts but sprouting from the roots under the ground. I’ve pretty much given up

If you can’t pull them up, snip them off at the base and paint the fresh cut with trichlopyr. I use Bonide Stump and Vine Killer for this purpose LINK

Same thing happens in my beds. I’ve had success using a garden trowel or shovel to get below the acorn or pecan and just pull up. Remove sprout and back fill your dirt or mulch.

I just did some searching on how to eradicate oak sprouts from the roots, and there is no good answer. You can maybe whip them back with strong turf grass in the area, but that won't work in a flower bed. Not all oaks will issue sprouts, but some will, and clearing the ground under them seems to invite it if the oak is prone to it.

From Texas A&M:

quote:

Q: What would you suggest in dealing with suckers or seedlings that emerge under oak trees. Some homeowners thinking of using Roundup herbicide, could this be harmful to the tree or is it even effective in controling an oak sucker or seedling?

A: LEARN TO LOVE THEM because the more you cut the more they multiply. Some homeowners keep them trimmed at a certain height and interplant Asiatic jasemine ground cover -- the ground cover conceals the oak sprout since the foliage is similar. We DO NOT recommend a herbicide application to sprouts since the sprouts are connected directly to the Mother tree and could cause damage. Roundup herbicide will do little more than defoliate the sprouts and could damage the tree to which they are attached. Learn to co-exist; they can become one of the most drought-tolerant ground covers available.

I use one of my Hondurans. He pulls what he can pull and clips low what he can’t. It’s a constant battle just like the suckers growing in the trees and the leaves falling out of them
