So, I went down a rabbit hole so deep looking into this and trying to figure out a DIY comp, that I’m embarrassed to say how much time I spent lol.

But here’s the gist
I priced shades from different companies from all over. You’ve seen them. Theyre guided on tracks and close in a patio completely when down. Most, if not all, were selling the same technology…fabric retention tracks. It’s basically a shade that has one side of a zipper sewn onto each edge and tracks attached to columns hold it in place. For ONE 8’W x 9’L I was getting quotes anywhere from $2000-$2500. That’s nuts.
So that’s where the rabbit hole came in. I’m determined to piece meal/diy these things but info, examples, ideas are few because the zipper tech isn’t sold alone or at least it’s hard to find.
Anybody got some alternatives before I spend the next 2 weeks engineering a design that I’ll probably never construct? Lol

This is what one of the options look like. There’s nothing about these things that should make closing in a patio cost $15,000 or so.

I will be interested in seeing what you come up with. I was pricing the manual patio shades the other week, and was blown away with how much they cost for just materials

Yeah, the “motorized” part doesn’t make the price jump up all that much from what I’ve seen. The price is already there lol. The fabric is pricey, no way to “DIY” that. If you want it to keep out mosquitoes, you probably can get off cheap. If you want it to block out the Sun…$$$$
If you just want it to block the Sun and aren’t worried about bugs, then I’d probably be looking at wire guided ones. Those aren’t nearly as bad and much more “DIYable”

The back of my house faces West & I live in the swamp. Soooo it’s either $$$ or become an amateur citronella farmer

The ones that Lowes/Costco sell aren’t bad. They’re less than $100. I have 2 right now. They block heat well but they’re too light. Wind whoops their arse. They’re 8’ long and it’s a little over 9’ to the ground from where I mounted them, so I basically installed kites. If you could put some added weight to the bottom bar it would be a lot better. Easy fix. Also comes with crap anchoring hardware that you could easily beef up
