have some zoysia that is partially shaded by a live oak and is looking a little rough from the winter, but it has started to green up. any recs on fertilizer/lawn food to get it to grow and thicken up?

Just use a typical high N lawn fertilizer. I currently use 33-0-6. Also wait until it's at least halfway green before applying. I scalped a week ago and I'm waiting until 4/15 to put down my fertilizer. Followed by aeration and topdressing in the beginning of May.

Zoysia is later to green up than other grasses so I wouldn't worry too much.
Keep that tree pruned.

Mowing frequently at the same height is the best thing you can do to encourage a thick carpet of turf. Mow it every five days.

Pour that high N fert on zoysia and be ready to mow twice a week...it will look awesome, but dang it seems like the mower barely cools down and you are back on it come mid July. I havent fertilized the last two years for this reason and my lawn suffered. I will be back to it this year, had to get rid of the clover that was beginning to thrive in the low N environment. It is knocked back almost entirely. Will fertilize next weekend

I think trying more of a spoon feeding approach works well with zoysia. Try finding something with lower N content and apply more often at a lower rate..also could try just using some iron if you’re looking for green color without the growth.

I use the lesco 24-2-11 with NOS..

I also keep my area cut low around 1” using a Honda rotary mower. Pretty nice on the feet! Right by the pool area..kids love to play on it.

How many sq ft is that area? That appears to be about the same size as one of my front yard sections. Currently have no grass so just curious as to how it'll look.

I’ve thought about a 7blade reel! Maybe this year.

It’s about 700sqft..after I laid the sod I top dressed heavy with mason sand to get it level ..pretty smooth..will hit it again this year and should be good for a while.

Do you want to thicken it because it was thinning before this past winter? You might be dealing with too much shade, even if it’s dappled. Zoysia varieties differ in their shade tolerance. Fertilizer unfortunately won’t overcome this.

I hit some of the cracks today with sand. Hope that doesn’t matter…

I didn’t wait very long ..grass down in December, top dressed in mid march. It took a little longer to push through than if it had been established better, but by June it was plush, and pushed through ..I did continue to spoon feed fert to keep it moving ..Zoysia does surprisingly well kept short..I do raise to 1.5” mid summer to help with some heat stress

I have zoysia and a Honda commercial mower. Would love to get the height of my yard down to one inch. Did you have trouble getting it this height? I feel like I would scalp mine pretty bad at that height

Ahh, I bit of a different situation since you laid in December.
Zoysia can be really short.
This fella keeps his at .5 or lower:

Don’t overthink it. The sod farm I bought mine from said 15-0-15 with 2% iron was great for around here south of I-10. I have Empire Zoysia at one home and Palisades Zoysia at the other home. The sod farm said Zoysia does not like a bunch of fertilizer nor does it like something high in nitrogen. Bermuda likes high nitrogen. They said fertilize the stuff 2 times a year, 3 at the most.
