Hey guys, I’m in North Texas and I laid Zoysia sod in my backyard last spring. It’s been awesome, super green, beautiful, weed free thanks to me hand pulling them all spring and summer

Anyway, it’s spring prep time here and I want to do the right thing for my lawn to get off to a good start. I called a bunch of companies to see if anyone would come out and do a one time spring prep of mowing, fertilize, weed control etc… but they won’t, they all want to book me into a subscription and won’t do a one time thing.

Anyway, I’m just going to do it myself, but I need some help, mostly knowing what to look for.

My grass is currently dormant but coming out of it, it definitely needs to be cut and leaves need to be removed, no problems for me there I bought a reel mower and I can tackle that.

FUNGUS
Parts of my lawn were wet for awhile this winter and my kids left some stuff out on the lawn that kept some water on the ground. I’m worried about fungus but don’t really know what to look for, should I just go ahead and put down fungicide? If so should I do that before or after I cut it and what should I use?

WEED CONTROL
Same question really, I don’t currently see any weeds but I want to prevent. Should I do that too and if so before or after I cut it?

FERTILIZATION
I feel more comfortable with this and have fertilized yards before, I know to do this after I cut. My main question is how long should I wait to do this if I also do fungicide and/or Weed Control.

And yes, I’ve spent a lot of time googling this stuff before I posted here, I’m hoping to get better specific answers to my questions from real people and not lawn maintenance websites.

Thanks to everyone who helps me

I had Empire Zoysia put down a year ago and I kept the VBW in check in the late summer and fall by using Celsius. I would suggest applying a pre-emergent to keep spring weeds from coming in. I applied Dimension here in BR a week ago. I wouldn't worry about fungicide unless you see issues arise.

The fact that you have no weeds is a plus, that means you don't have to worry about a post-emergent application. Use Prodiamine for pre-emergent weeds when ground temperature is around 55 degrees for 48 hours. This varies from place to place so use this Ground Temp Website for your location. Use appropriate mixture according to the label and be sure to calibrate your equipment be it a granular spreader or a sprayer. You can add an ant killer to the mix as well, Taurus/ Fipronil works great and has year round results. Use the Prodiamine twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall and you shouldn't have any weeds to worry about. If you do start to have weeds you can use a post-emergent called MSM, it works best when the temperature warms up or you can use Simazine if it's cooler.

Fertilize once the last frost has hit and the grass has started to green up. You can add a fungicide to the fertilizer and apply it at the same time as well.

Thanks! Looks like my 5 day soil temp average is 53 so it’s about time to do it. Should I cut my grass and remove all the leaves before I use Prodiamine?

I wouldn't apply a fungicide if there isn't a fungus active. You'll need to look for gray/brown spots on the leaf or yellowing then browning of the whole leaf blade. You don't want to create fungicide resistance by using them all the time. You should also rotate fungicides. I like azoxystrobin and propiconizole.

A beginner program would be prodiamine in the spring and simazine in the fall as your pre ems. A step up would be Specticle in the fall.

MSM or Celsius will get most summer weeds. Any good 3way will work in the winter months. Certainty/atrazine will get winter grassy weeds.

You can if you feel more comfortable. The most important thing is that you water in the pre em.

Yes, you should definitely rake the leaves, you want the herbicide to reach the ground and not stay on top of the leaves.

Find a SiteOne store in your area. They can give you a table for your region and grass type broken down by month with the product you will need for fertilizer, weed control, fungicide, and pesticide.
