Anyone read this article? It mentions something about lots of players transferring from Evangel to Calvary Baptist. I was just wondering why? I had never heard of this. The article doesn't go into details about the situation.

There have been many players transferring to Calvary for years now. It's getting to the point where Evangel is losing its power and Calvary is going to be the top notch school now

Johnny Booty is only the Athletic Director. He did not start the school back up, nor did he he get things rolling. Yes he is very invovled in alot of things, but he did not start the school back up. He was personally asked to come to Calvary.

Not that many Evangel kids left Evangel to go the Calvary. It was only a hand full.

The schism was over home church meetings vs. Denny Duron's Sunday services. It was all about money. If you go to church in private homes you don't put money in the basket for Duron. Both schools will do fine with athletics. Both are horrible in academics.

Bootys, Hesters came over to Calvary. The school has programs that are only 3-4 years old. Doug Peterson (Farvres B/U) is their football coach. It has split the kids that would normally go to evangel. Weakens the program signifigantly. They have some great athletes at Calvary now.

It hurt Evangel when Ronnie Alexander resigned to go into private business.....Coach Bachman is a good coach - don't get it twisted.....but Coach A is a cut above a good coach....

Say what you will, but you don't hear about Evangel players failing to qualify very often....Geiggar didn't qualify as a frosh for Texas, if I remember correctly, but I think he's the only one.

The split was between Johnny Booty and Denny Duron and it was bitter. When Johnny Booty was fired by Duron as teacher at Evangel and as a Coach on the Football team (Booty, as Head Coach, led Evangel to the 5-A State Title over West Monroe when his son, John David Booty, was only a Sophomore), it was too much for John David. He skipped his Senior year at Evangel and immediately signed with Southern Cal (primarily because of his respect for Norm Chow, Offensive Coordinator, and his disgust for Saban regarding his belief that his brother, Josh, and Abram had been mistreated at LSU). Last year, Calvary beat Evangel in Football for the first time ever, and Evangel was really good (I saw the game). Jake Booty, the fourth Booty brother, was Calvary's QB and threw the winning pass with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation. The Duron-Booty rivalry very much endures today. There will always be bad blood between them. Sad in a way, but it really makes these games intense. This week Calvary beat Evangel for the Class 2-A State Championship in Baseball (12-2). It would be difficult to overestimate the satisfaction that Calvary (Booty) players, coaches and fans experience when they beat Evangel (Duron). I have followed both these schools for years. I have sons and daughters who have attended both schools. Hester and John David Booty played together and have remained friends over the years. Chase Pittman also played with Booty and Hester.

Good points TigerBill. The one thing that remains though is that since the split Evangel has won 3 state titles and been to the Dome one other time while Calvery hasen't been once and Calvery lost a ton from last year and I have a feeling Evangel will steam roll them this year because Evangel is loaded.

If you want a premium education in Shreveport/Bossier - skip Evangel and Calvary. Go to Loyola Prep.*

*edit - just don't expect to challenge for a state title.
