Okay, here is the roster and my takes. Would love to hear people's thoughts. First I admit I am an optimist, and second that these are just my opinions based on what I know of the players and coaches:

PITCHING: Projecting B+ staff performance, but could be anywhere from A- to C.

1) BERZON is the real deal and the cornerstone of the bullpen. She will be solid and could possibly surpass even her stellar season last year.

2) HEAVENER: First question mark. Can she be as good as all the hype as a freshman? If she can it will be a good year. If she can't the question marks get bigger.

3) VALLEJO: Second question mark. A year off due to injury. How will she return from injury and can she be the kid that pitched against UW the first 6 innings in the playoffs a year ago?

4) CLOPTON: Third question mark: TWO YEARS since she has pitched competitively!! No clue what to expect but she was solid at OSU before injuries.

*Casanova is a bullpen & junk-time relief pitcher. Not built for Power 5 circle.

RETURNERS:

STARTERS: Needs to be a strength of team for a strong season.

1) BERZON (P1): Clearly the biggest returning starter
2) COFFEY (3B): Another big returner. Coffey was most consistent at plate before her injury last season and was tearing it up! If she returns to form it will be a huge help. Was hitting .404 when she went down.
3) REDOUTEY (OF): Steady is how I see Redoutey. Nothing special but she gives adequate production at the plate and holds her own in RF (where she'll probably start again). .303 last season with 15 extra base hits (5 HRs)
4) BERGERON (C): I suspect she will have a better year than last when she hit .254 which was better than her freshman year. Kid has a ton of power but has struggled at times against elite pitching. She is very solid behind the plate with a great arm. This is one of the spots we'd look for a little more power in the line up.

*PART-TIME STARTERS: Who will earn a permanent role?
5) *DANIEL: Sierra Daniel has a strong chance to earn permanent playing time but will likely have very strong competition in the incoming class. No real power works against her but she is an athletic solid Power 5 level player. Beth's reputation for valuing experience over talent bodes well for her. Daniel has great speed and good barrel control though, and Beth usually has a player like that in her lineup (..Briggs, Andrews, etc.).
6) *MANNING: She came on late and looked better than both Daniel and McKee defensively at 3B, but with Coffey returning she won't get a shot at 3B. Instead I could see her moved to 1B if no one shows big promise and power there. Manning is mobile, athletic and didn't do too bad at the plate either. 1B her best shot at playing I think.
7) *MCKEE: She won't play infield. Doesn't look ready. In travel ball she was exclusively an outfielder for the Hotshots so not sure what happened at LSU. Seemed outmatched at the plate against elite pitching too, but athletic and has some speed. Not sure where she will fit in on the team given the talent infield.

RETURNERS FROM BENCH:

1) JADYN LANEAUX: Solid outfielder who may get a shot at the one open outfield spot (assuming Redoutey & Lassiter hold the other 2 spots). She has the make up physically and has shown some promise albeit in limited opportunities. I could see her getting her chances.
2) TORI EDWARDS (IF): Battle for 1B playing time but Manning probably inside track. Edwards has major power, and when she hits it well everyone knows its been hit well. Consistency is the question for her. Having that power is her upper-hand if she can execute on it but one freshman might have something to say about this position.
3) MAIA TOWNSEND (OF): Outfielder who has been mostly baserunner.
4) MCKAYLA WALKER (IF): Got playing opportunities due to injuries early last year but was phased out after some early struggles. Assuming she is projected infielder seems a bit crowded for her to get more fair opportunity.
5) SYDNEY PETERSON (IF): Has been injured for awhile. First year got to play a good bit. Not too impressive offensively but was decent on defense. Don't see her breaking in for time given the talented freshmen and sophomores.
6) ABIGAIL SAVOY(IF): Battle at 1B which likely will have Manning & Edwards above her. Maybe the freshman too.
7) SAVANNA BEDELL: Not sure what to make of opportunities. Haven't seen her much as all. Think she's outfield which there is no shot of her getting on field there I would think, but listed as a utility player.

NEW ADDITIONS:
1) TRANFERS:

-JAILA LASSITER (OF) was a huge pick up! Athletic, speedy, defensively elite and consistent at the plate with some pop! Plays with a fun edge too. Hit .314 at Ole Miss and started CF. Betting she slides into Briggs' vacated spot.

-AVERY HODGE (IF) I'm guessing will be given every right to Pleasants' vacated spot at SS. Probably her spot to lose. Kid seems like an exceptional defensive player, but offensively nothing special. She is athletic and speedy and hits from the left side. Has OU experience including in WCWS but was not everyday starter. Hit .284 last year (.261 as a freshman) with 97 total ABs.

-VALLEJO (P) is other transfer.

2) FRESHMEN CLASS is very talented. Lots of promise and given the opportunities and failure reps I could envision at least one and maybe a couple of them earning significant playing time. Heavener as a pitcher will come in getting immediate reps for sure.

--HEAVENER (LHP): She'll get early chances to show she can be a strong member of the rotation.

--JONES (IF): A dynamic player with athleticism, speed and power, I think Jones has the best shot of freshmen position players to earn a starting role or have immediate impact. Kid seems to do it all--hit for high average, some power, elite speed, good glove and ultra competitive. Will likely battle for 2B with Daniel, given Hodge likely will inherit SS spot. Will her talent translate to the SEC right away is the open question.

--HARRIS (OF): Not quite as dynamic as Jones, but an extremely gifted outfielder who will likely battle for that 3rd outfield spot with Laneaux. She is athletic and has solid gap power. I think she will get a few shots.

--PHILLIPS (C): Phillips will give Bergeron a run for her money if her bat is as solid as it can be. She is a powerful little package being a recent weightlifting competitor. Swings with bad intentions. Bergeron has the upperhand given experience knowing Beth's philosophy and how she values experience so much and the 2 years she has had behind the plate probably help Bergeron a lot. But I wouldn't count the Phillips kid out. She may press for time behind the plate if her bat is good.

--FRANKLIN (IF): Franklin is a physically strong corner player who has a lot of power. Likely chances are at a crowded 1B spot, but may get 3B grooming reps. But to get meaningful time she'd have to beat out Manning & Edwards at 1B. She could hit her way onto the field at 1B. Coffey has 3B locked down this year.

--CALVEZ (OF): Slapper with good speed. But not much power. Fits mold of that touch and go player that Beth sometimes likes. Lack of pop probably puts her behind other OFs in pecking order given not a lot of power on the roster.

I didn’t read all of that, but I think you’re underestimating Redoutey. She’s improved every season and if she does the same in her senior year it will be a very strong one.

Beth is nice and all but this program is treading water
Dobson is gone so maybe the offense will have a chance but again not much power in the lineup and lacking experience
I think this is finally the make or break year for Torina and she seems exasperated the last two seasons at the end
I get the feeling she really struggles balancing the lifestyle a head coach demands at this level and missing her kids growing up, and I'm not being critical if her priority is her kids then maybe she needs a lifestyle change

@The First Cut: I pray you are 100% right!! Because I actually think she will do well, but your assessment suggests she will do better than just well and if that is true it would be a big time benefit. Program could really use her best this year, and I believe she is fully capable.

@nicholastiger I get the frustration, given the lofty expectations we Tiger fans have of our school's sports programs. And I do believe Coach Bryce will make a big difference too--He's done well everywhere he has coached and literally turned Louisville's hitters into different people in a short period of time.

Again, I admit I'm a bit of an optimist but Beth hasn't been a failure of a coach in my eyes. Has she fallen short of the lofty goals of we fans of WCWS trips and Championships---Yes. But "mediocrity" is not how I would characterize the program's history under her. But I too long for a return trip to OKC and possibly a title. This is probably not that year, but if a couple of the newcomers pan out I think they can still stay in the upper echelon of the SEC.

Like you point out, missing the pop in the lineup is what is most glaring. Just a little offense and they are probably in OKC last season. Drawing Canady was TOUGH though!

She is competitive and wants to win and I know she works hard, but I also know she cherishes her family and I wouldn't expect a coach to compromise that. Not sure if she struggles with that balance or not. I get the felling though that if they are competitive this year knowing how young they are she gets another year at the helm to show & prove. #evertheoptimist

Beth is held hostage by Baseball’s success. If baseball continues to be top notch, expectations will be high for softball by default. LSU has never been an elite softball school but we should expect regional and super regional appearances annually and an occasional World Series appearance. Hopefully there will be a championship in the future.

I don't think it has anything to do with baseball, they haven't been to WCWS since 2017 and I don't think they are going in 2025 either
They've had four super regional chances since 2017 and come up empty with some talented rosters so some of it is underachieving
It's ashame the covid year got washed because they had a really good chance that season

I dont follow softball in great detail but do enjoy watching it. Over the years I figured out if you do not have one of the top 4-5 pitchers in the NCAA that can dominate the opponents then you are not playing for the championship. You will just be playing to make the WCWS…

There is just not enough POWER in this lineup to make it far in postseason. Especially now with Oklahoma and Texas in the SEC, it will be hard to host a regional because that knocks us down a couple more pegs in the Conference.

We will almost have to get 4 hits to score 1 run in an inning with this lineup or have the other team make numerous errors. Here's hoping the new hitting coach can work some magic.

I was hoping for at least one ( even though we needed about three) power hitter coming in from the portal.

Pitching will have to hold opponents to two or three runs a game in the SEC for us to have a winning season in the Conference.

this was a great breakdown and I agree with almost all of it!

does anyone have any inkling as to who we are looking to hire to fill the open assistant coach position since Dobson left? also interesting that he stepped away only to continue to work the camps these past few weeks

The way I see this club is pitching and defense first, Berzon is elite but can she take the next step and be a bulldog out in the circle even when things don’t go your way like Florida last yr in game 3…up 5-1 b6 and lose..that can’t happen. Offensively this team won’t be a heavy hr team but could hit 80-90 doubles which is what Tiger Park dictates with the wind blowing in much of the time. I suspect you will see Bergeon at catcher with Madi at first, Jones at 2nd by mid season, Hodge at SS, Coffey at 3rd, Harris in left, Lassiter in cf and Redoutey in RF…very athletic lineup far more athletic than last yr. Overall, I see a return trip to a super with a better pitching staff than last yr!!

My understanding was that he announced his departure but was still technically working for a few more weeks or a month or so. I'd be shocked if they don't fill that position within the next few weeks but haven't heard any rumors. I would imagine it would be a defensive specialist or just an all around good coach, as I would think Beth will keep full reigns of the offense in Bryce's hands. One of the coaches is expecting a baby soon (Sandy) so they'll need extra help soon too. Did hear Taylor Pleasants, Briggs and one of the other recent graduates are helping out as volunteers now.

That is a pretty astute assessment in my view. And agree with you on Berzon too. Hoping she does just that, and takes that next step from being one of the best pitchers to being one of the top pitchers. Think many are right though that we will need solid defense and pitching to do anything special. And hope you're right about another Supers visit. If the freshmen adapt quickly I think that's doable. But the lack of power in the lineup does concern me. However, your point about athleticism is well taken: If there are a lot of doubles you can make up for the lack of dingers and speed/athleticism is needed to make that happen. Just not sure Beth is willing to give talented freshmen the chance to take starting roles without injuries (like last year).

Has Beth announced Neal as the hitting person? In HD bio it says he is the hitting coach, now that he is leaving will that designation go to Neal? We will see, multiple hitting coaches doesn’t work, never has, never will

From very reliable firsthand source: Hitting is his responsibility now solely with the exception of the lefty slappers who are tutored by Sandy I believe.

I do believe multiple hitting coaches can work if they work well together, have very similar or compatible hitting philosophies, have an agreed upon hierarchy and have egos in check. I think the problems arise when there is more than one hitting coach when one of those criteria aren't met. But sounds like LSU doesn't have to worry about that now--or soon.

Perhaps however if you look at the best hitting clubs in softball Florida, Texas, OU, Tennessee, Georgia, UCLA, Duke..they all have 1 hitting person

Beth bringing in her usual haul. Pumped she's signing top pitchers again and ready to see the program with a new hitting coach.
