What was the story with LSU Akiem Hicks?

This guys is a pretty good player in the NFL, has been for a while. He was part of our #1 rated class back in ‘09
Per wiki “After the 2008 season, he was rated as a top junior college player and signed to play at LSU. However, recruiting violations by LSU made him ineligible for the 2009 season; unable to transfer to another American football program, he went to work at a DirecTV call center in Colorado Springs, Colorado while he considered his next move.“
Never heard this story any of you know what happened?

The investigation found that former assistant coach D.J. McCarthy improperly arranged for transportation and housing for former defensive lineman Akiem Hicks in 2009 before later trying to cover up those actions.
The NCAA accepted LSU's self-imposed reduction of two scholarships during the 2010-11 academic year, as well as a 10 percent reduction in official visits and reductions in recruiting calls. LSU had already begun reducing official visits during 2010-11, but the NCAA expanded the punishment to include 2011-12.
McCarthy resigned in December 2009. Hicks never played for the Tigers before he left LSU.
NCAA Committee on Infractions chairman Dennis Thomas said LSU's violations were all considered "major." Yet he stressed that punishment could have been more severe if not for the efforts of LSU's compliance department to discover and report the violations and to cooperate with subsequent NCAA inquiries.
"The committee really felt that the LSU compliance staff and institution did an excellent job and that they assisted the (NCAA) enforcement staff in the investigation regarding these violations," Thomas said.
He pointed specifically to senior associate athletic director Miriam Segar, who became suspicious of Hicks' living arrangements from the time he arrived in Baton Rouge. According to an earlier LSU report on the matter, Segar spent weeks pressing for answers and made the decision to bar Hicks from traveling to LSU's 2009 season-opening game at Washington because she was unsatisfied with the information she had received.
I GUESS THIS IS WHY COMPLIANCE HAS SO MUCH CLOUT

Coach DJ McCarthy got him housing. Compliance got wind of it early and Hicks left before ever playing a down.

That 2011 DL could have been Montgomery, Hicks, Brokers, Adams/Mingo with Benny Logan as a rotational guy.
Logan was great as a Tiger, but Hicks and Brokers would have been two monsters inside

Remember Shep getting a multi game suspension for pocketing his stipend?
FFS, just lighten up on the weed rules

I always think about this whenever I see Hicks on TV. Our defense was already nasty but oh what could have been. Doesn't make a difference in the title game due to our inept offense but would have been nice to see.

I think Lavar Edwards was a solid rotational guy too. Played a couple years in the NFL.

That explains why she still has a job after not reporting Davis's abuse.

Yup, some dumbass on staff alerted Miriam and Bo and they self reported, though the chance of NCAA discovering had to be less than 1%.
This is the infamous case in the AD annals of LSU where Bo and compliance threw an office wine party to “celebrate” the self report.
Saban made a lot of brilliant moves at LSU, but among his best was getting Emmert to park Bo’s arse behind the ticket counter glass!

if she is still at LSU, she is probably looking for another feather in her delusional scalp....the heck with what it does to our program. Hicks slept on the coach's couch I think for a short while.....we can't have that kind of incentive to play at LSU....so awful of LSU.

People hate Segar, but she freaking saved us on the Hicks deal. The housing was the part that we copped to publicly and made concessions to the NCAA over, including McCarthy leaving the program and Hicks leaving. There was more going on and the investigation was turning up the use of prepaid phone cards for Hicks, as well. Some of those were in dollar amounts way larger than any phone usage could ever justify. It's a good thing that his entire situation went away as a "housing arrangement" deal and that we were able to avoid a deeper dive at the time.

I wonder what were the chances of the NCAA investigating the Hicks deal if Segar hadn't started poking around. In real life I never want to criticize the whistleblower, but the NCAA is not real life. And then they threw a party for uncovering violations.

Fair point.

I’m kinda surprised how many people in this thread seem to think cheating is okay...

This is what’s wrong with the NCAA. Poor kids wants to play ball at LSU. Signs , but can’t enroll yet. Comes early to work out with the team. Can’t afford to live here, so coach pays for the apartment ——NCAA violation
Cam Newton ——same fricking year, his dad is on tape pumping him out to MSU for more than 100k. Cam plays the entire season , wins the Heisman and NCS.
WTF ?

He was in one of my classes at LSU for the first two weeks of the Fall semester and stopped showing up one day. Makes sense now.
