2019 LSU vs 2001 Miami

Miami was stacked with future NFL talent and so was LSU. If you look at Miami’s schedule they blew almost every team out that they faced. They won a close game against VT, but I believe all other games were won by multiple scores. However I don’t think they went through the gauntlet schedule LSU went through. And we know LSU blew most teams out as well. It would nice to see how the greatest offense of all time would do against that Miami defense. All biases aside, who do you have winning? I think LSU wins close.

LSU would have beaten that team by 2-3 scores. I laugh every time these teams are compared.

I really doubt LSU wins by 2 or 3 scores. That’s just being a homer man. That Miami team would have put up a damn good fight more than likely.

Miami would’ve finished 8-4 if they didn’t score an offensive touchdown.

Agree. LSU, but close. Two best teams ever, IMO. That Miami team would have gone 8-4 without an offensive TD. Lots of defensive/special team TDs.

That Miami team was loaded everywhere except the most important position. Ken Dorsey vs Joe Burrow would have been a severe mismatch.

The Miami team was great but the lore is heavily skewed by what players on their roster (some of which were not necessarily contributors to their success in 2001) later became in the NFL.
2019 LSU was the superior college football team.

Arguably the best player for either team would be Ed Reed. Best safety of all time who grew up an hour from LSU.
ETA: Andre Johnson was an elite WR, and the fact he may have been the 3rd best receiver in that game is insane. Some generational LA talent in that game with Reed, Chase, and Jefferson

I think we’d win but it would be close. Probably similar to the texas or bama games. They were loaded in all 3 phases, played with a high swagger and confidence and would have been tough to stop but i do think we’d outscore them by 7-10 points.

In the 80s and early 90's Miami dominated like no other. 4 national titles over an 8 year stretch. 3 legendary coaches over that period
By comparison, we've got 4 spread out over 60 years

Very true, but the same is true on the other side of the ball. Miami gave up 300+ yards in 4/12 games (323, 308, 312, 476). LSU gave up 300+ yards in 9/15 games (530, 374, 457, 340, 541, 614, 304, 322, 396). The 3 games in which we gave up 500+ yards, the opposing quarterbacks were Sam Ehlinger, Kyle Trask, and John Rhys Plumlee.
It's definitely an interesting conversation, but pretty hard to compare because the strengths of each team are flipped and the style of play changed so much in the time between the two teams.

Was 2001 the Miami team that should have lost at Viginia Tech but the tech guy dropped the ball in the endzone when he was wide open?

I love 2019 lsu but the defense was not that good. They just outscored teams. 2020 bama should be in this conversation too

Miami was awesome in the 80s and 90s and 2001 was an awesome team, but when it comes to these particular teams, Miami's schedule was a joke compared to LSU's. Miami played one team that ended up in the final top 10 (#8 Nebraska). And Nebraska got demolished and gave up 60+ to Colorado the game before. LSU beat 5 of the final top 8 teams and beat them by an average of 46-22. And that includes demolishing the #1 scoring D in the nation twice (UGA and then Clemson).
Miami almost lost to BC (Miami caught a ricochet pass at their own 2 yard line with seconds left and returned it for a TD) and VT's WR dropped an easy 2-point conversion to tie the game up at the end of that game. Toward the end of LSU's 2019 season, they looked like a machine even against the best of the best.

Talent wise this is a conversation. Accomplishment wise it is a blowout.
Different eras; different styles so hard to compare head to head.

Who the hell is going to stop Burrow, Chase, and Jefferson, with Joe Brady calling plays?

The 2020 Bama team never had a single Covid case and caught teams that were missing half their roster to opt outs and Covid.
