All DLinemen wearing knee braces during drills - BK’s attention to detail

Saw the video on the homepage of the DLine going through drills with Jamar Cain.
I couldn’t help but notice every player is wearing knee braces on both knees. This struck me as odd as I don’t remember the guys doing this during O’s tenure or Les’.
This seems to me like a preventative measure against injury. Can anyone comment on if this true?
If so, this is next level protection and attention to detail from BK. You got to give it to this guy for wanting this team to be as healthy as possible coming in.

I love it. Does you no good if players blow a knee before a season even starts. Why chance it?

this is smart, but don't all programs do this nowadays?

Les mandated them for all practices for both the O and D lines. Games were optional. Not sure about Coach O.

No.

You do realize people with knee braces have blown their knees out and those without knee braces have not. It's literally a toss up every time you step onto the field. Why chance anything is probably your motto.

I think 90% of college offensive linemen wear them during games on both knees. not just those who have blown them out.

For anyone interested
Medial collateral ligament knee sprains in college football. Effectiveness of preventive braces
Mixed results in a 1994 study, with certain position groups experiencing a lower injury rate trend not meeting statistical significance (starters and backups on the line positions), with others having a higher injury rate trend.
Medial collateral ligament knee sprains in college football. Effectiveness of preventive braces
quote:
This is the second of 2 articles on a 3-year investigation of medial collateral ligament sprains of the knee to assess the effectiveness of prophylactic knee braces in NCAA Division I college football players. Position, string, type of session, and daily brace wear were recorded. The injury rates for braced and unbraced knees were used to create an incidence density ratio. The data were stratified and simultaneously controlled for position, string, and session and evaluated for their statistical significance. The 987 Big Ten players generated 155,772 knee exposures over the study period (50% braced). Noticeable differences existed in the rates of injury for the braced and unbraced knees in almost every position during practices, depending on player or nonplayer status. When the influential factors of position, string, and session are considered, there is a consistent but not statistically significant tendency for the players wearing preventive knee braces to experience a lower injury rate than for their unbraced counterparts. For starters and substitutes in the line positions, as well as the linebackers and tight ends, there was a consistent trend toward a lower injury rate in both practices and games. The braced players in the skill positions (backs/kickers), at least during games, exhibited a higher injury rate.

That's because they were both shaved apes and not head coaches.

hopefully the braces have gotten better over the last 30 years.

This isnt new, maybe O wasnt requiring them. But its not groundbreaking.
Most teams required them for atleast oline 2 decades ago.

Seriously. I got to the 1994 part and the end of the post and was immediately furious at myself for reading the whole post.

You’re wrong there my friend. There are a lot of players that haven’t had any knee issues.

Just know that it could be three things.
And by that I mean:
1. some are prophylactic ligament protection.
2. Some are post-ligament tear
3. but also the tricky one is OA braces.
Most linemen should be wearing OA braces to push on the lateral (outside) of the knee just to reduce the medial load wear. That’s where you see most osteoarthritis (medial comp OA of the knee)
It’s all preference too. One thing thst is similar is that they are ALL custom and not off-the-shelf. Off the shelf works fine, but custom provided confidence.
Some have DJ and some have BREG. You cannot tell the difference between a BREG OA brace and their x2k. Some like powder coated metal while some like polymer.
LSU has the cash to supply any brace to give a player more confidence. Any sec school does.
Now….schools like Elizabeth City State, or UNC Pembroke? No. They have to ask for funds from the donors or the players have to get fitted for customs, themselves. They will also roll with knockoff ASO ankle braces. Cheaper? Yes….just as effective? Maybe not. But they DONT have a choice. Some high schools have better bracing choices than these small colleges.
Additionally, you won’t easily be able to see it, but there is a petellofemoral “pusher” that these big linemen need. It’s a part that pushes the patella to the inside to prevent dislocations. The strong ones are put on the big metal braces.
Dislocations are a bitch. I flopped around like juvenile female each time I dislocated the patella.

The braces are eye wash. Does very little to prevent injury but makes fans feel good.

Where is the evidence that knee braces prevent knee injuries?
Thanks.
Thanks.

But not against a ‘Marcus Lattimore’ hit. Nothing could.
That’s why you’ll see a lot of OL wearing for the benefits of protecting against Osteoarthritis. It’s a load reducer.

It helps keep you from getting injured when the side of knee gets hit when your foot is planted.

This seems plausible, but no solid evidence that it is true.
Thanks all the same.
