for example, could Russel Shepard be redshirted this coming season, his sophmore year, even though he played as a true freshman? Or Ludwig on the basketball team needs a redshirt year. Three years in the weight room to be ready for a solid contribution his junior and senior years. It's the rare case that a 17-18 year old is physically ready for SEC play in football.

student-athlete may be offered the opportunity to redshirt for one year which allows the athlete to spread those four years of eligibility over five years. In a redshirt year, a student athlete may attend classes at the college or university, practice with an athletic team, and dress for play but he or she may not compete during the game. Using this mechanism, a student athlete has up to five academic years to use the four years of eligibility, thus creating the phenomenon of the "fifth-year senior."

Negative. You can not get a true redshirt after your freshman year. In sheps case he would have to get hurt and miss the majority of the season and apply for a medical redshirt.

Wrong. Players may redshirt any year. Look at Mallett for instance.

Damn guess I'm wrong. I thought you could only redshirt the first year on campus. I stand corrected. Now that I think about it it makes sense

Yeah. Virgina Tech was reshirting Tyrod Taylor in 2008. Well after losing their 1st game that year they took off the redshirt.

In addition to what the others said, you can't get a medical redshirt until your redshirt is used.

they can be done in any year. you could, for instance, play a kid his true freshman, sophomore and junior years and then have him red shirt his senior year to have him return as a RS senior the following year. I don't know why anyone would want to do this, but it is within the NCAA regulations.
