RPI rankings

Warren Nolan

While most people consider Texas/Arkansas/LSU/Tennesee as the Top 4 teams the SEC right now, an Interesting thing on current RPI rankings….Georgia, Vanderbilt and Auburn are currently in the Top4 for National RPI.

Should be interesting to see how the last 4 weekends + SEC tourney shake out in determining how many Top8 national seeds the SEC gets. I think 4 is pretty much guaranteed with the potential to get maybe 6 national seeds.

I think they'll give the SEC 5 national seeds with the ACC getting 2 and a team like Oregon State in the Independent getting the last 1 out of pure pity.

Agreed. 5 SEC 2 ACC and... Oregon or Oregon State - they play this weekend. Fun fact Oregon state is 0-2 against SEC and 3-3 against Oregon's conference.

Oregon St really tried to work that schedule to their advantage. Mostly garbage independent schedule with a few one off "big" matchups.

Win most of your easier matchups. Steal a couple single game matchups against bigger competition and let them keep your RPI ok.

They're also playing a ton of road games which the RPI loves.

Magic number is 19 I believe for a national seed. Just have to take care of business and keep winning. If we lock one up I feel better at our chances of making it to Omaha

I don't think they go that high with it in the SEC. In fact, I think 5 last year was the record (I could be wrong, I think I remember that though)

LSU's SOS is 53...which is significantly lower than Georgia (4), Texas (25), Vandy (2), Auburn (1). LSU also has less "Q1" wins (8) compared to Georgia (10), Texas (14), Vandy (13), Auburn (11). That's where the discrepancy in the rankings comes in. LSU has played fewer "good teams" and won fewer games against good teams than those four.

However, the next 9 games give LSU a chance to change that.

against top 25

LSU 7-6
UT 10-1
Vandy 5-5
UGA 11-8
Auburn 11-9

Outside of Vandy, sure. But 5 of those 6 losses were on the road for LSU.

I think we get 4-6 top 8 seeds this year:

Texas (RPI #2)
LSU (RPI #6)
Arkansas (RPI #5)
Georgia (RPI #1)
Vanderbilt (RPI #3)
Tennessee (RPI #12)
Auburn (RPI #4)
Alabama (RPI #9)

Depends how rest of season shakes out but Tennessee most at risk besides Auburn and Bama who are only 9-9 in conference. Tenner still play @LSU, Auburn, Vandy, @Arkansas. If they have a winning record in that stretch their RPI will climb.

Looking at Warren Nolan, our Q1 W-L is not very impressive.

All of those losses are to top 25 teams. 5 of them being on the road.

We have 9 Q1 games left and maybe 12 depending on South Carolina since its away.

They have plenty of chances to increase that number especially with Tenn and Arky being at home.

8-6 against Q1 is indeed lackluster

Gotta spread it around as much as possible for national interest.

I don’t think the SEC should have more than 5-6 national seeds but I sure as hell don’t think Oregon State should come close to getting one with that abomination of a schedule.

I doubt they had much choice. Can you imagine trying to get a bunch of teams on your schedule while everyone else is in the middle of conference play? No one wants to schedule a week in the middle of conference play against a perrenial top 10 team especially if they travel

Oregon State was stabbed in the back by the teams of the former PAC12. I am pulling for them.

IMO, college baseball is becoming less and less relevant as the number of schools who take it seriously declines.
