Similar to Ole Miss a few years ago. It continues to reinforce my opinion that nearly all SEC teams have the talent to win it all and what separates them is the coaches who know how to make them peak at the right time. You have to be willing to suffer some losses early to let your high upside guys work through their struggles and develop

The level of baseball needed to be in / win championship has dipped pretty significantly in the last few years just like in football.

The talent is so much more spread out.

And they did in an incredibly impressive fashion. They arguably got the hardest path to the NC by any team in their position.

The only team they have faced that wasn't a 1-seed/host was The Citadel, the 3-seed in their regional.

Good point.

For reference, compare that to Ole Miss's unexpected 2022 run:

They had to beat #6 Miami in second game of the Miami regional...but only once because the 2 seed in the regional (Arizona) eliminated Miami in the next game. In the CWS Ole Miss beat #14 Auburn in game 1. But in game two they got to face unseeded Arkansas (and two more times after that) instead of #2 Stanford or even #14 Auburn again. Then, in the finals, they faced (ironically) unseeded Oklahoma.

It was a great run by Ole Miss, but the bracket did somewhat fall apart around them. OM only had to win 4 games vs. nationally seeded (1-16) teams during their run. If OU wins the NC they will have 9 wins over nationally seeded teams.

It would be, at least, the most unexpected run to a NC since Coastal Carolina in 2016. But even then, Coastal only had 5 wins vs. top 1-16 seeds to win the NC. More likely, it would be the most unexpected run since Fresno St. in 2008 given the path to the NC. It's not like OU has benefitted from the rest of the bracket falling apart around them. Thus far they have played (almost) only really good teams...and beat them all.

Has it?

In the last 5 years only 1 team who wasn't a top 8 national seed (Ole Miss in 2022) has won the NC. And to do so, the champion had to beat top 16 seed in the CWS finals

Loser of CWS finals since 2021

2021 - (4) Vanderbilt
2022 - (NR) Oklahoma
2023 - (2) Florida
2024 - (3) Texas A&M
2025 - (13) Coastal Carolina

OU hasn't gone through bums to get to this point.

They are a great team. Good for them. I also noticed they keep the on base swag dances and goofy dugout theatrics to a minimum.

Has the phrase, "Getting hot at the right time", ever been more appropriate than now for OU?

Fresno St.
Ole Miss
LSU last year probably

OU looked good when they came to BR early in the season when I thought LSU was elite. LSU wasn't but OU impressed me that weekend. Their 3rd baseman and left fielder killed us at Alex Box.

Their pitching has really developed. They dominated GA and Bama. Goes to show you great pitching can dominate great hitting every time. OU has pitiful facilities compared to about anybody in the SEC. They are building a new Men's baseball stadium and this run will certainly help their facilities.

It's good, no drama coaching, humble focused players and a bit of baseball fortune. I'd rather OU win vs any other SEC school as we don't compete for players with them to any extent. OU will win this series given what I've seen so far., NC is good but OU is better.

All of those teams were playing much better than OU entering the NCAA Tournament. In the month before the start of the tournament OU lost 2 of 3 in 4 straight series vs. Auburn, Florida, Arkansas and Tennessee. They then lost to a crappy LSU team in the first game of the SEC tournament.

This isn't a team that was playing (around) .500 baseball down the stretch then jumped up a level in the postseason. It's a team that was struggling to beat anyone with a pulse in the last month of the season before (now) suddenly taking out one top team after another...something they didn't do at any point in the season.

The OU path has been very difficult as well. I thought for sure UGA would beat them twice. Even though UGA has struggled a little with hitting.
The path OU had to take exemplifies how hot they have gotten and won 3 straight in Omaha.

This isn’t complicated. OU is loaded with talent. That talent on pitching and defense was their Achilles heal all season.
They got their shite together and I believe they will win the title because of it.

It is unbelievable. What were they 11 in the SEC Standings and get knocked out of the SEC tourney.

I think the announcer said they lost their last 4 series in conference season…

Am i misremembering the Ole Miss baseball national championship? I vaguely remember a middle of the road sec team getting hot and winning.

Whether it is "complicated" or not is a matter of opinion. As is how much talent they have relative to the teams they are competing against. But as a matter of objective measures, they had the second fewest wins of any SEC team that made the NCAA Tournament. They had only 1 series win over an NCAAT team all year. They weren't even playing well at the end of the season (3-7 in their final 10 games).

This isn't the case of a really good team who finally got their shite together just in the nick of time (they weren't ranked to start the season). It's a team that over the course of 50 regular season games was a very average SEC team: 30-20 (14-16). A team that never won more than 3 straight games against quality competition all year (even that is a stretch) who has suddenly won 7 straight games against 4 of the top 15 teams in the country.

Fresno St. was a preseason top 25 team who struggled early, but found some juice at the end. Ole Miss was a preseason top 5 team who got to No.1 before collapsing, then finding their mojo again navigating through an unexpectedly favorable path to a NC. OU is a team that started unranked and struggled to beat good competition ALL season who is now doing something they have not done all year.

Nah, Choke-lahoma will show up and hand UNC the title. And we will have to hear 5 sec teams couldn’t get it done.
Shame on Ole Miss for blowing first game against UNC

I put $100 on UNC +1150 to win it all a couple months ago when they won the regular season series against GT. LSU was already out of postseason discussion and I needed a horse

that’d prob be my longest shot ever to win

As much as I'd hate to see an SEC team win the title, I can't help but pull for OU. They have been one of the most fun teams to watch throughout the tournament. Also, the UNC players just seem super douchey.

Look at preseason expectations for depth and their freshman class that Skip Johnson was raving about in their preseason. Those freshman are now sophomores. Baseball America had them ranked at 19.
