Well, I'm not sure I can give you the definitive history (I'm a little skeptical about the story involving "eau" plus making your mark as an "x", since eaux is the French pluralization of many words ending in "eau.") I can ,however, tell you that my dog's name is Phideaux.

The real question here is... how many people outside of Louisiana realize that Geaux is pronounced "Go" and not "Gocks"?

It can be hard for anyone... but after taking that exit for a few years, I can say with confidence that it is "Tchoupitoulas."

There was an Iowa fan on here a while back and he thought "eaux" rhymes with blue, so he was tring to fit in on the Rant typing things like this: "what would yeaux deaux?"

Many French names end in "eau" pronounced as a long "O." However, many French immigrants could not write. So when they immigrated to the South, British (and French as well) officers in charge of recording their immigration would spell their name correctly with the "eau" ending and ask these people to "make their mark" next to their name (as a sort of signature). Since most of these people couldn't write, "making their mark" meant literally drawing an "X" next to the name the officer had written. Many of these people then assumed that their last name ended in "eaux." So, now because there are a lot of Cajun last names ending in "eaux" (pronounced "O"), and it's almost exclusive to Louisiana, it's been Geaux Tigers.

I was raised in Natchitoches Parish. That one does always give folks problems.
