Downvote me all you want...

Honest question what was/is the deal behind that? Watching games on Saturday night espn as a kid in Iowa, I was always curious about that. It always piqued my interest into the game.

BTW football is fun to watch on a Louisiana Saturday night.

The field used to be painted contrasting shades of green each 5-yard section; it still occasionally has the different shades (maybe from different cuts?) but not nearly as noticeable as before. Look up the video of the 1971 Notre Dame game for a good example, with the bonus of John Ferguson & Walter Hill on the audio.

There’s a Sonic on the corner of John Deere and 16th in Iowa City.

Meet me there and I’ll be happy to explain our traditions to you.

The education budget in Louisiana is so low that teachers can only cover so many things.

They had to decide between learning to count to 50 by 5’s or 10’s and the powers that be went with 5’s.

It is also good on Saturday nights to smell the aroma of the coffee roasting plants along the Mississippi River. It’s why Alabama fans always say we smell like corn dogs. ??

Thanks. Lots of history in those two articles.

IDK "the ol' beachcomber" (Bob Scearce) did broadcasts in the day.

FTR, traditions and rivalries are what make the CFB world go 'round. Once those are disassembled, CFB morphs into double-A baseball.

All you need to know is that its a tradition to run through the goal post out of the locker room and have the numbers painted every 5 yds instead of 10.

I (think!) I remember students rushing the field after beating FSU in 1982 and some students went for the goalpost but there was no chance it was going anywhere because it had two attachments to the ground, not just one.

After the H style goalposts had been replaced by the Y style posts, the filmmakers for Everybody’s All American filmed game footage during halftime at a game in Tiger Stadium. They used some sort of camouflage fabric to hide the single post and added 2 fake legs to make the goalposts look like the old H style.

I don’t know when they were switched, but I believe we went to a single goalpost for a while. My freshman year was 1993, and I remember them making a big deal about bringing the H Goalposts back for the 100th anniversary season of Tiger Football. I think it was the Tulane game that year when they had the main celebration and that’s when they re-installed them.

It's a throwback to a time during the 1930s when Gov Huey Long was a huge supporter of LSU football. He got the stadium financed because they put dorms in it. A surplus of dollars went to the athletic department one year and not wanting lose the money the next year because they didn't spend it, the department spent the excess on a 100 year supply of field paint and steel. So, to put it to use, they numbered every 5 yards and added a second post to the uprights.

Im pretty sure Dinardo brought back most of the old traditions like H style goalpost, along with the white jerseys at home. Part of his "bringing back the magic" of Tiger stadium plan.

i think he also the brought back the 5 yard markings and eye at midfield. None of it started with GerryD but he brought back a lot of old stuff and made it cool again.
