I'm a HUGE history geek. Every time I have the opportunity to visit Tiger Stadium, I always walk around to look at the old dorm rooms. I always observe the original stands. I just imagine myself being there for the Billy Cannon run, the USC game, the Earthquake game, etc. I always look up historical photos of Tiger Stadium.
I finally found what I want.. Not sure why it took so long for me to find it. But I have... So I'd like to share with you guys.

1921. Notice the cars on the sideline. Crazy how you used to be able to do that. Lord how times have changed.

great pictures and a question, when was the North End Zone added? I always thought that all the Stadium dorms were built at the same time.
favorite urban legend...supposedly Claire Chennault shipped a P-40 back from China in a crate and this crate was stored underneath Tiger Stadium...

Student dormitories were built into the stadium in 1931.
"In 1936 capacity was more than doubled when the north end zone was enclosed with a 24,000-seat addition. Money was not allocated in the state budget for the seating expansion, but money was allocated for dormitories. To bypass the legislature and increase his beloved school's stadium capacity, Governor Huey P. Long ordered that dormitories be built in the stadium, with seating above the student living quarters. Until the early 1990s, the West, North and South Stadium dormitories were featured as part of student housing at LSU."
About that plane though
That's pretty interesting. I couldn't find a reliable source, but I found a comment on this article

I hunted for that P-40 in the mid 70's, and heard it was dismantled and stored underneath Tiger stadium. I finally reached a guy, who identified himself as LSU's head of maintainance, and inquired as to where that P-40 went. He got mad and told me it wasn't there, it was none of my business and quickly terminated the conversation. Whoever I spoke to was lying.
I believe the Baton Rouge, destroyer USS Ward Museum group acquired it from LSU later on. My friend, John Fallis, found the airplane and traded the museum for it. It's now in flying condition in south Louisiana."

hmmmmm....a P-40N was a late war model, the Flying Tigers used the P-40B, which in my interpretation of the urban legend was shipped back to LSU
the scale model in the bookstore flown by Mike the Tiger (with SEC West kill markings
) is of a later model (I think a L variant)

Awesome Link.
Crazy in 90 years (1924-2014) we've gone from 12,000 to 102,321 stadium capacity. And I just realized in 90 years, the capacity increased by 90,000.
So 90 years from now, will it be 192,000? Only time will tell

These are the best threads. Loving reading about the early days of LSU football.

OMG....could you imagine upper-upper decks on the east and west...
the one change i'd like to see (but impossible due to the water table) would be to have the field 5 feet or so lower...would make things a lot better for folks down low

From my time in AFROTC in the 80s, we heard about the P-40 under the stadium as well. During that time, the USS Kidd Museum was expanding and it added a P-40. Somehow, we heard that the one on display was the one under the stadium.
Even if that is not true, it's a nice legend.

So it was flown by the guy the mascot Mike is named after?
