We had nasty mfers like Eric Reid, Brandon Taylor, Craig Steltz, Jamal Adams, Laron Landry, Grant Delpit, TM7, and Craig Loston. Teams were going to feel them in the run-and-passing game. These guys were game changers at the safety position.

Bless Jardin Gilbert, but his play has left much to be desired. A play against Florida sticks out in mind where he diagnoses the run, gets into the backfield, and whiffs on the tackle. It ends up being an 8-yard gain.

Teams should fear throwing over the middle against LSU because a baw is coming to lay them out. We desperately need a big-time safety from the portal.

I think Dashawn Spears can be that guy.
Hopefully JuJuan Johnson goes back to defense next year.

Take a look at our 2025 recruiting class.

DBU is on it’s way back

I follow recruiting. Some studs are coming to play corner but I don’t expect freshman safeties to be ready to play every down. Need to be bulked up and physical.

I must ask why ppl are so set on this recruiting class other than hope? Sage Ryan was a high 4 star and top 50 national recruit. Gilbert was a mid 4 star and top 150 recruit in the country. What’s different with these kids? It’s all projection.

It's a numbers game. You can only miss on so many 4 and 5 star guys

Blind optimism...when you suck, a recruiting class is all you have to hang onto. The problem is there's no one to coach em up.

It really doesn’t work that way…so you’re saying eventually we will get lucky and one of these 4 or 5 stars will hit?

I think our best coaches are actually on the defensive side of the ball.
Baker, Raymond, Davis, Peoples.
Just need to get the talent & experience

Need to poach one from a B12 team that is surprisingly good at defense. Like Iowa state or BYU

I was at the MSU game in Starkville Laron Landry’s freshman year. I remembered being floored by the closing speed and athleticism (this was before he got so bulky).
I didn’t realize he would start a long line of stud safeties for the next decade or so. We haven’t really had that since Delpit left.

Has Gilbert ever made a tackle? It’s embarrassing watching his technique, seems like you would at least get lucky and get someone to the ground every now and then. Crazy man

Maybe he’ll start to play with some piss and vinegar but he whiffs on tackled. Like you said hes not even slowing them down

of course it's all projection, recruiting always is, but when you stack your roster with a a bunch of highly rated guys like that instead of a few, then your odds of having guys who develop into elite football at the position goes up.

My bad i thought you were talking all DBs. The safeties now without a doubt are the weakest link on the defense. SMH

I’m doubtful on Spears too. He’s had a fair amount of playing time and he’s shown no flashes of physicality either.
