LSU football entered spring practice embracing competition on the offensive line. With every starting spot up for grabs, the entire unit had something to prove.

Weston Davis took advantage.

The five-star offensive linemen signed with LSU in 2024, but didn't see much action as a freshman. He played just 20 snaps. The only time Davis played in a competitive game was in the bowl game, where he entered in LSU's goal-line package. Davis finished the year with 20 snaps.

Now a redshirt sophomore, Davis got the bulk of LSU's starting right tackle reps in spring practice. That's a good sign for LSU and the talented offensive lineman.

There's no question about Davis' athletic tools. His first sport was basketball before he emerged on the football field. On3 compared Davis to former UGA tackle Broderick Jones as a recruit, highlighting the long frame and movement skills.

LSU lost four offensive line starters from the 2024 squad, including both tackles. LSU signed two experienced transfers, but Brian Kelly said LSU is looking for young talent to step up and claim the tackle spots. Tyree Adams is the clear favorite to start at left tackle, but the right side was more of a question mark.

Davis was the obvious candidate thanks to his talent, but LSU needed to see Davis take a step forward in the technical arena. The amount of reps Davis got with the one's in spring signals LSU believes in Davis' progress.

Kelly highlighted Davis at a spring press conference, saying the tackle was "doing a nice job."

To be an elite tackle in the SEC, you need to have the things that can't be taught. There's a certain combo of size, physicality, and athleticism needed to handle college football's top pass rushers. Davis has those skills.

Yes, that's what I was thinking too.

IMHO our biggest area of concern is the oline. This makes me feel better but time will tell.

I think the only way you can make this statement is if you “aren’t concerned” with the safeties because you assume they’ll suck. We haven’t had even average level SEC play back there since 2019.

Gonna be interesting to see what starting 5 they put together in Fall. From what I have been hearing and reading they mixed it up to keep guys from entering the portal. Wish we would grab a tackle from the portal cause we are a little thin depth wise there. I’m gonna predict they move Chester to guard by the first game. But then again Thompson would slide in well there if Davis has really taken hold to the tackle spot.

To get views, you have to cover different angles

This is certainly one

I think your best potential lineup probably looks close to this:

LT- Adams
LG- Mubenga/Chester
C- Moore
RG- Thompson
RT- Davis

I also wouldn’t be surprised to see one of the freshman take that LG job and run with it and that’s not a slight at all to either Chester or Mubenga

I think that would be for sure the best to roll with against Clemson at least. I’m sure Coach Davis will know best about if those young guys are ready. Would be shocked if they don’t have Moore and Thompson starting just with their experience.

So Davis got a lot of reps. That's basically the whole article. There's no indication from anything written in that article that he's about to have a breakout aside from

I mean I hope Davis is great but this article is useless

Inexperience is a killer for an OL in the SEC. So we got yet another LSU OL without much playing time that's expected to come and start
er a la Chester. That rarely work out like you want and expect it to.......

We just had two tackles start for 3 years straight out of HS.

While not common, there are some studs that can play right away. We have been recruiting very well and most of those recruits have had the opportunity to sit behind vets for 1-2 years.

We will be fine

The only other thing I'm reading into this is that CBK tends to sandbag info with the media. So hopefully, this is the case and Davis is actually doing awesome behind the media lines...

I think the addition of Alex Atkins will be pretty huge to OL development as well as studs coming into their own.

That would be a shocking development considering the number of veteran players on the roster that could fill that role. Doubtful it happens

Its refreshing to see a 5 star wait his turn in the process and thrive after a year of seasoning. Very rare in today’s college football landscape

I’m not sure he really “thrived.” Now, all reports out of practice were that our defensive edges were dominant and is probably the best unit on the entire team. Up there with WR. But reports were that Davis was regularly getting dominated at RT. I think the coaches had him run with the 1st team all spring for a few reasons. 1) to get him reps there and hope he won the job. It doesn’t sound like he did. 2) he probably did get developed enough to be the RT2 (I think Thompson winds up starting there, and 3) to keep him from hitting the portal as someone else mentioned.

We desperately need him for depth at the very least in ‘25, and if he continues to improve, even if he doesn’t wind up starting in ‘25, if he knows that he’s almost guaranteed to start there in ‘26, with a little NIL, you can probably keep him from entering the portal after the season. Why go somewhere else to start in ‘26 if you can just stay in the same system and still have 3 years of eligibility here? Some school will likely offer him some NIL, but we should be able to match it to keep him.

There’s still 4 months before the Clemson game and he has time to get stronger and work on whatever it was that was getting him beat so much this spring (again, this is just according to media reports, and admittedly, they didn’t see everything) and go out in fall camp and win the job. I think that’s what the coaches would LOVE to happen. But just reading the tea leaves, I think Thompson does wind up sliding out to RT, Moore moves to Center with Mubanga and Chester surrounding him at LG and RG. No matter how those 4 positions shake out, it seems like Tyree Adams is the only one entrenched at a position—LT—coming out of the spring.

An oline is only as good as its weakest link.
We still have a serious weak link with those guys at LF.
I hope the freshman Curiel can take over that link.
