That’s going throw a ton of players into the portal. Specialist’s nightmare, as every school has walk ons in that room.

The implications are immense too, you almost need a few developmental teams who can take your young talent and develop them to play in your system.

Depends on what the final scholarship numbers are.

85 scholarships is too many anyway with the portal. You can't keep that many people happy.

It will be better for specialists, because they will now be on scholarship.

105 man roster limit means all 105 are on scholarship…no one in the country will hold as many kickers as LSU has right now.

Yes, they’ll all be scholarshiped…they’ll just be fewer. So two scholarship kickers, two punters…right when NIL was making it nice to be a walk on.

There will still be schools that keep “walk-ons”. They will just get compensated for being on the 105 man roster. You won’t have too many 4-star guys wanting to run scout team all year

& don’t most teams have more than 105 players during the year?

It’s more than football though.
quote:

Football, with a current scholarship restriction of 85, will now have a roster limit of 105 — a 20-scholarship increase for those schools willing to give the maximum. In an important note for football, the 105 may not be a requirement until the start of the competitive season, giving coaches flexibility to go beyond that figure during preseason camp, for instance. Baseball, with a current scholarship restriction of 11.7, is expected to have a roster of 34. Scholarship spots for softball and volleyball, each currently at 12, will increase to 25 and 18, respectively.

There was a 120-player roster limit before, there will be a 105-player roster limit going forward, which is a 15-player difference. LSU only has 110 players listed on the roster for 2024. There will no longer be an 85-player scholarship limit so expect 105 players to be on scholarship including the specialists.

Here is the breakdown of the 110 listed right now using the position listed on the LSU website. Holly and Toviano are included in these numbers, as well.

Wide Receiver - 14
Offensive Line - 13
Safety - 11
Defensive Tackle - 11
Linebacker - 10
Cornerback - 10
Defensive End - 9
Running Back - 8
Tight End - 6
Quarterback - 4
Placekicker - 4
Offensive Tackle - 4
Punter - 3
Long Snapper - 2
Deep Snapper - 1

1. NIL isn't going anywhere
2. There will be a lot of roster flux and many players that would be walk-ons normally will be on scholarships, including some specialists. I expect a scenario where there are a few unused scholarships each summer that go to "walkons"

We have had maybe five relevant walk-ons on our special teams in the last 30 years. You are much more likely to see stars like Stingley, Tyrann Mathieu, Tre'davious White, DJ Chark, Devon White or Harold Perkins on special teams than walk-ons. It is too important of an area of the game to allow walk-ones to play while resting your best athletes.

With all the portal jumping at the first sign of adversity, it’s going to be incredibly difficult to keep 105 scholarship players happy.

I was talking about PWO kickers, punters, and snappers. Almost all of the top 10 snappers and punters went PWO last year…many top kickers only get offered PWO as well.

Is it a roster limit or a scholarship limit?

Roster limit used to be 105, but then some rule allowed them to add more practice squad guys when classes began

ETA: it is a roster limit with no maximum number of scholarships. So technically teams don’t have to change the way they operate, but they will get greedy.

Someone like Deion will get rid of all walkons to bring in his “Louis”

All that this means to me is Texas A&m will lose their gay tradition and throw a fit.

IDK, seems like $100k/yr will be about the minimum each SEC player gets. The ones that want way more will shop around, but I assume at least half the team will be happier than pigs in shite with the money.

Wont these guys be on scholarship now? Seems like a specialists dream.

Depends what your dream is and how good you are. There’ll be fewer overall spots for specialists, which means much fewer spots for specialists out of high school. Good gig for the ones that do get them though.

Every single kid who stuck around until that point and didn’t make the 105 just missed a year of college football. That’s just crazy. I guess they don’t lose a year of eligibility…just a year.

With no walk- ons, the grade point average and graduation rate for your teams will drop. Could cause some problems in the future.

Those were the kids that REALLY loved the school too. They could have played a level lower or just at another school, they just loved the school enough to go put their head down and work for a couple-few years to earn a spot.

The second that this would start effecting major programs is the second that they either eliminate that rule or complete the sever between the college eligibility and the games entirely, which is inevitable anyway.
