On news of NYJ Saleh's firing. Why do CF coaches get buyouts and not NFL?

I think it's absolutely absurd that college has gotten to the point coaches have buyouts in their contracts and owed sometimes 10, yes 10, fricking figures to buy them out for doing a shitty job. Who the hell started this? Why is it only in NCAA but not NFL?
Whoever LSU moves onto down the road, hopefully a long time from now, I fully 100% support hiring a coach who doesn't require that whether it means dipping down to a North Dakota St FCS school or whatever. Jim Tressel went to Ohio St from FCS and won a Nati. Jimbo Fisher went from FSU, to losing seasons at TAMU. Poaching from another good program does not mean at all success.
I can't wrap my head around having a buyout of $100 mil. It completely unincentivizes the coach to perform. Just do bare minimum, and you'll make $100 million in 1 year instead of 10 years. This has to end. How it got here I have 0 clue. How the league above you doesn't even do it.

Saleh was a defensive coordinator HOPING land a head coaching job.
These college coaches get wined, dined, and begged to come be the ball coach.
HC in the NFL is a terminal/pinnacle/apex job in the coaching pyramid.

In my opinion, BK is worth every penny we've invested, as long as he continues progressing toward winning a National Championship.
LSU has always been just one step away from becoming a true dynasty. The Les Miles era came close (if only Perrilloux had stayed out of trouble). However, after the 2011-12 season, LSU entered a decline.
Aside from the exceptional 2019 season, LSU’s performance from 2012 to 2020 has been above average at best.
We needed a CEO-type head coach, and BK is a perfect fit for that role. We've been fortunate with our head coaching transitions, from Saban to Miles to Orgeron to BK. It hasn't been as tumultuous as what Tennessee, Florida, or Auburn fans have experienced after their legendary, national championship-winning coaches moved on.

You realise NFL coaches get paid the balance of their contracts, too if they are fired?!?

10 figures is a billion dollars. But 9 figures, $100,000,000, yes.
It's an interesting question why this is happening in college football but not so much the NFL (although this is all contractual, and there are some decent contractual entitlements in the NFL as well). Seems it's the usual inflation formula - too much money chasing too few candidates.

NFL coaching contracts are fully guaranteed, they get paid every penny of their contract regardless if they’re coaching or sitting at home. You just don’t hear about it because rarely are NFL coaching contract amounts are disclosed to the public.

Who is owed a billion dollars?

Saleh is getting paid $20k a day to sit on his arse

That just depends on the contract.
Most NFL coaches get paid a buyout when fired

My dream job is an SEC coach who stinks it up for one year, gets fired and bought out, and then hangs out at the beach with Coach O and some blonde hoes.

Coaches salaries aren't disclosed, which is the only reason you don't hear about it. Belichick used to go out of his way to hire ex-HCs so he didn't have to pay them as much, because of guaranteed contracts/buyouts.

Many people already pointed out there are buyouts, but the reason they probably aren’t as big is because of the hiring process. In NCAA you are often hiring a successful coach away from an active job. In the NFL you are promoting a coordinator from another team, or hiring an out of work former HC.
NCAA has to encourage the coaches to leave their current gig to come to your team, NFL is giving the coaches a new opportunity

A buyout is just paying off a guaranteed contract. NFL coaches have them just like college coaches but it's one owner paying it out of his pocket and not a public university. Like they said above, Saleh is getting his "buyout"... to the tune of half a mil per month for the next 2 years.

I thought NFL contracts were private
You don't know if buy out or not, but I thought the jets were on the hook until it runs out

I swear I read the other day that Selah was making like “x” # of thousands dollars per day for like two years.

Yeah the even discussed how if he got DC job that would lower payment
It's just a continuation of the contract - I guess they could negotiate but out

For every Jim Tressel you have 10 Billy Napier’s. It’s not even close to the same thing running an FCS or GO5 program to a program like LSU.
For the record NFL coaches get buyouts. Saleh was in the last year of his 5 year contract. Matt Rhule buyout was 34 million with the Panthers. It’s offset some because he got the Nebraska gig.
