The old Tiger head logo that Auburn has recently brought back to hats and t-shirts, the one I wrote about Missouri also using a few weeks ago, and the one that most Auburn fans call their favorite vintage logo.... yeah, according to this article, it was created by an Alabama graduate. Wait, it gets worse. Not only did he graduate from Alabama, but he created it for LSU before it came generic clip art for other teams that use a tiger mascot like Princeton, like Missouri, and yes, like Auburn. Talk about a double whammy.

Also used by Missouri, Pacific, maybe Princeton, maybe Clemson.

Unfortunately it apparently wasn't copyrighted, so it's not exactly "ours".

Few of those have anything to do with Tigers. So your stupid point is what exactly?

So what does that have to do with the origin of the LSU logo?

I bought books from this kind man at Co-Op bookstore on Chimes St. in Tigertown in the early 60's. He related that the cap was symbolic of headgear worn by Chinese "house Staff" and was popular since the Chinese Bandits 1958 beginnings. Nice gentleman-- nice bookstore from back in the day-- fond memories.

Sorry, I have to respectfully disagree. Never have liked Sailor Mike, almost as bad as Toonces.
Helmet Mike FTW.

bama is beginning to take credit for everything they can, esp LSU stuff. i'm not saying the artist didn't graduate from bama because i have no idea but the impression that we wouldn't have a logo if it weren't for bama is what some bama fans want to portray. i swear bama fans are setting themselves up for a reality check in the future and no one is gonna hear their tears.

It isn't really a sailor hat, it's a beanie. Wasn't it a college tradition (all schools, not just LSU) for freshmen to have to wear beanies? I think that's why that type of hat is so common on the old college logos.

you ARE from Metairie so of course you can't realize what he is conveying.

It's probably because of the WWI and WWII, logo's and cartoon characters had similarities to the armed forces.

Just to throw my 2 cents in...
BU has something called Sailor Bear, people love it.
However, the university will not issue license for it's production due to some sort of legal issue relating to it's use by other organizations.
Has anyone ever heard this about their school's classic "sailor" mascot?

I haven't heard this anywhere (except in the linked story), but I have long suspected this was the case with "Sailor Mike" - that LSU didn't own him.
Schools didn't think to protect their logos in the old days. I'm believe logo copyrights started becoming important in the 70s, as more games were on TV and branded merchandise began emerging.
